A big round of clap for a pal of mine who is the #1 ranked Horde player on his World of Warcraft server. He's got a red nose, but he's never pulled Santa's sleigh. That's right folks, it's Rudolph.

Let's call a spade a spade shall we? A short piece titled, "Chinese WoW Players Speak Out" ran on Eurogamer making some pretty bold claims.

"Chinese World of Warcraft players are being discriminated against by English speakers who assume they're all gold-farmers, according to reports on Chinese-language website Tales of Warcraft.

More than 7,000 posters on the site's forum claim they have fallen victim to the problem, which is said to occur when Chinese players attempt to join groups. Apparently there is a common belief among English speaking players that most non-English speakers are gold farmers and are only playing for commercial gain."

Now correct me if I'm wrong as I play the Non-Politcally Correct card, but don't most players want the people in their group to be able to understand them?
If you can't communicate with the group then of course they are going to boot you out. If you could communicate then the group wouldn't know you were Chinese now would they? I understand, first-hand, how hard it is to run raids with people who don't speak the same language. I work at TenTonHammer.com where Gibberish is the mother tongue.
If you can't communicate with the people in your group, don't call it discrimination. Call it common sense.
I'm having a hard time believing that the article is even legitimate. Of all the people they could quote, they chose to quote a guy who runs a site that tracks the prices of WoW gold on the secondary market. They complain that people think the Chinese players are gold farmers and then they quote a site that makes all of its money from gold farmers. To quote the paladin character from a recent hit movie, "Huh?".
Bottom line, I don't make people tap out a few verses of God Save the Queen, but if they can't communicate with the group I'll be booting them out too.
Disagree? Think I'm a right wing imperialists pigdog? Send money for my "rehabilitation", and then send your thougths here.

DDO isn't out yet, but we've got the list of Feats available. SoE is revamping the low level zones? Wha? You read it right and Tony has the scoop in EverQuest 2: Low Level Revolution. Are you Hot to Prot? Best find out I'd say. Our crack team of WoW investigators have driven their Kodos to Zul'Farrak where they found...well, I can't tell you that. You need to read the guide.
Here's what's new on the network!

    • World of Warcraft: Guide to Zul'Farrak

"This week we look at the very popular Zul'Farrak instance. Zul'Farrak is located in the Tanaris desert in the far south of Kalimdor and is a contested zone."
    • Dungeons and Dragons Online: Pre-Launch General Feats List

"Wondering about what feats will be available in Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach, and what their pre-requisites and effects are? Wonder no more! Ralsu has compiled a list of all general feats currently in the DDO beta, and we’ll continue adding and updating right on through launch and beyond."
    • EverQuest 2: Low Level Revolution

" In an unprecented move for a established MMO, SOE is completely revamping its low end game.   What can we expect in this next update and how will it change the game we know?  RadarX gives you a first hand look at what is happening."
    • Guild Wars: Hot to Prot - Prot Monk Build

"Are you brave enough to take on an enemy spike build head on in 8v8? Protection monks are one of the most desireable and difficult classes in PvP. Here's a build to get you started down this rewarding but tricky path."
    • EverQuest 2: Comedic Caption Content

" One lucky winner, will walk away with a signed lithograph of the Frostfell art included in EQ2's holiday content (lovingly donated by one of our staff). For your chance at winning, please submit a Everquest 2 screenshot with an amusing caption.   Whether its cliff jumping in action,  who can make the largest train, or someone threatening Nagafen with a spanking send us your funniest one.    The screenshots and captions will judged based on originality and how much soda you cause us to spit. "
    • World of Warcraft: Balancing Challenge and Fun

" It’s a well known maxim that in life the harder something is to achieve the bigger the sense of accomplishment you get when you achieve it.  To go along with this once you achieve large difficult goals, tasks or projects, most people feel the need to do something even bigger or harder the next time.  Once faced with and having accomplished difficult tasks most people are not content with going back to ordinary or mundane tasks. "
    • Auto Assault: Faction Skills - Humans

" Oh what will those Humans think up next? "
    • Guild Wars: Balancing Challenge and Fun

"This week's editorial takes a look at the balance between casual and hardcore gaming in MMORPGs. How well does Guild Wars do at catering to both crowds?"

    • Vanguard: Saga of Heroes: Just What Exactly Are You?

"When asked what your playstyle is in your favorite MMO, how do you answer? Terms like hadcore, core and casual are tossed around left and right in the gaming community, but what exactly do they mean? Raya and Lady Sirse take a look at just this in an effort to help you figure out what you are."
    • Dungeons and Dragons Online: The Hardcore versus Casual Debate

"DarkGolem takes a look at today’s casual-friendly gaming environment, and discusses ways in which games like Dungeons & Dragons Online can keep the challenge of a game alive without diminishing the fun. "
    • Lord of the Rings Online: Casual Game, Hardcore Fun

"Shayalyn discusses old-school games such as EverQuest, and the ways in which current games have changed to meet the needs of casual and time-limited gamers. How will Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar devs meet the challenge of making a game that’s casual-friendly, and yet compelling and deep enough to appeal to hardcore players?"
    • Auto Assault: Casual versus Hardcore

"This week we look at the differences between the hardcore and casual players and how Auto Assault caters to each group. Is there enough content for both? Will one set of players affect the fun of the others? These questions and more are looked at in this week's editorial, Hardcore vs. Casual in Auto Assault."
    • Auto Assault: Human Faction Skills

"We have a new skill listing up today covering the Human faction skills. Faction skills are shared across the different classes of that faction. Some are shared across all four classes while others are only shared by two. So go ahead, and find out what those crazy Humans have came up with in their battle against the perils of the wastelands."
    • Auto Assault: Roadstop Comedy Club Part 1

"We bring you a new weekly feature called the Comedy Highway. Each week a brand new humorous article is posted for your reading enjoyment. This week we start with a brand new series called the Roadstop Comedy Club. I won't spoil all of the details, but it's about a crazy man who's been given a second chance as a comedian at the local rest stop."
    • Comparing the Big Names of VOIP

"We examine why voicechat is the new rage among MMO gamers, dispel some of the frustration and stigma that prevent some gamers from joining in, and also which spoken word solution deserves the right to run in your MMO social circles."

  • You can find a Mini QNA with Pirates of the Burning Sea Devs Flying Labs at GamerGod.

Q: With the ability to form guilds, will there be a possibility to have an intra-guild co-operation, such as guild A allying with Guild B to hunt down pirate guild C, and get some benefits such as an allied chat channel or the like?

A: We’ve talked about alliances, but don’t have explicit plans to do this in R1. It isn’t hard, it’s just not on the schedule.

    Very short answers.

  • In a Press Release today, it has been stated that WoW has a little bit of a discrimination problem. Who is being discriminated against? People of Asian descent primarily. The fear that they are "Chinese Gold Farmers" has given the English speaking servers a bad name.

There is a common belief among English speaking players in World of Warcraft that most non English speaking players are gold farmers. This is a type of player who is only playing the game to profit, not for the “love of the game.” Gold Farmers are largely despised by players who feel they take away a certain purity of the game.

To combat gold farmers, players are requesting anybody who wants to join a group to type one or two lines of English. If the sentences or grammar are not proper English these players are rejected from joining this group. This is what is creating the backlash among non-English speaking players with feel they are being discriminated against based on their language.

There is an article on Kotaku (thanks mmorpgdot) about this issue. I'm not going to say whether I agree with it or not, but I'd love for you to Tell Me! what you think about the whole ordeal.

  • It's the first game to release for the new service MMOCenter.com. There are details up on the FAQ (llinked above) about the pricing plan (a hefty 19.95 a month) and pre-order perks (did I mention that hefty 19.95 a month?).

I read someplace there's a PreOrder, what will that get me?
PreOrdering is $19.95. PreOrder Perks include:
Discount: A 25% discount on the monthly subscription costs of MMO Center for one full year.
Closed Beta: Early access to our closed beta testing program, including the game client itself, the beta community website packed with inside information and exclusive contest just for pre-order subscribers.
Beta to Live Character Transfer: When MMO Center goes live with its first two games, The Chronicle and Machines, only characters belonging to pre-order subscribers will roll over into the release editions, saving them from being erased or reset. Get ahead. Stay ahead.
Customized Item: Instead of offering characters a stock special item that they often outgrow, pre-order customers will be able to customize a unique item that evolves along with their character. The items are very powerful, and the earlier you pre-order, the more powerful your custom item will be!

I'm sorry.. did I mention that 19.95 a month subscription plan? Whoah Nelly

A special Tuesday "Thank You" to the folks who took time to send me their thoughts on the casual versus hardcore dilemma. The casual players overwhelmingly stated that they thought the cost of the games was too high, yet the hardcore players nearly all wrote that they would spend more for to get more content and challenge. What's a developer to do?

How many of you remember when games were either considered PvP or PvE and never the two should meet? I'm one of those gaming fossils who while playing EverQuest was sure that first-person view and no PvP was the way to go. Stories of woe in Ultima Online and later in Lineage fueled the fires of the anti-PvP crowd. Getting ganked by players many levels above you or in Phil's case, by a cow sent many players reeling and bloody to EverQuest and its "care bear" philosophy on PvP.
I still consider first-person view more immersive, but I've changed my mind on PvP. Consensual PvP with all of its faults is so much fun that I can't stop spending my limited playing time participating in it. Guild Wars got me hooked with its fast paced battles and now I find myself spending time in the battlegrounds of World of Warcraft. There is something rewarding about defeating another player and as often as not, rewarding about losing those really tough fights to the best of the best.
If you haven't tried PvP because of past experiences it might be time to hook up with a copy of Guild Wars or World of Warcraft.
Disagree? Want to gank me in Warsong Gulch or dice me with your Warrior/Monk in Guild Wars? Bring it on, just send your thoughts here.
