In 2007, Black Prophecy was revealed to a swarming fanbase anxious for the good old days of space combat titles rooted in games like X Wing vs. TIE Fighter and the Wing Commander series. It was a rough three and a half years for fans, but publisher Gamigo pushed on with development despite a belly-up, bankrupt first developer . This month Black Prophecy entered closed beta in North America (the game has already been released in the Europe), and Ten Ton Hammer strapped in to offer our first impressions.

  • Crysis 2 Review

Crysis 2’s predecessor set the graphical bar higher for first-person shooters, both in terms of eye candy and gameplay. In this next title in the series, Nanosuit Prophet returns as an outbreak of the Ceph virus in mid-town Manhattan leads to a full-blown alien invasion. The lengthy campaign takes players on a whirlwind tour of New York City twelve years in the future and embroiled in crisis, and multiplayer offers some interesting twists on online shooter gameplay, but does the game live up to its Empire State Building sized expectations and price point?

Video and computer games have been shockingly devoid of parody for too long. Pardoy, in its own funny way, confirms success - something has to be familar and recognizable in order for its caricature to achieve comic effect. Magicka is one game that seeks to redress that imbalance, but instead of making humor the focal point of the game, Magicka is also a surprisingly innovative and enjoyable couch co-op* game (*provided you have a couch in front of your PC and a glut of gamepads, four players can play at once). But if a spellcasting system powered by clever combos (each button press representing a differnet element) isn't enough to catch you attention, maybe a DLC send-up entitled Magicka: Vietnam will.

  • Ten Ton Hammer's Ethec talks with DDO's Erik Boyer and Iain Currie at PAX East 2011

Excluding Duke Nukem Forever (which counts only in concept), we only found one five+ year-old game on the show floor at PAX East 2011. That game was Dungeons and Dragons Online, and Producer Erik Boyer and Design Director Iain Currie were on-hand to show us how Turbine continues to keep this hybrid free-to-play success story fresh.

One feature that DDO historically lacked is a full-fledged crafting system - but no more! Iain describes how crafting works, why you'll need to play the game to be a successful crafter, and how Turbine plans to phase in the changes to minimize player economy upheaval. Next, Erik takes us deep into the fourth and final part of Update 9. It's a mad journey through the sensibilities of a fleshcrafting mindflayer "artist", complete with a catwalk and "Spring Fashions" plus what might be DDO's most intense boss fight yet, so have a look at this DDO Update 9 / Crafting Improvements video from PAX East 2011!

So it's a digitally repackaged WoW TCG - ( http://wowtcg.cryptozoic.com/ ) Microtransactions without the thrill of opening the pack - taking your money and giving you less. More sparkle ponies anyone?

I'm sure folks will flock to it for the tchotchkes it opens up in game.

I will publicly offer my credit card number on this comment thread to buy you a GW2 branded tutu IF i get a picture of you and/or Phil in it.

Please wear something underneath the tutu, that's not the purpose of this request.

Fossil fuel industry amounts to big money too, especially in the early game. Having a city in the region dedicated to mining and drilling (and later smelting and refining), buying in with bond issues (get the finance department to enable $100k bonds), and attaching these industries to a road and rail network via a trade depot or trade port can easily rake in hundreds of thousands of Simoleans a day. You can then gift that money to your or your friends' other mean, lean, and green cities in the region, or simply use those resources to build great works sites that benefit everyone.

Yes, there's environmental impact with this approach, but upgrade your locally supplied fossil fuel power plant and water plants with filtration, keep ground polluting industries away from the water table, and be careful of what's downwind of your air polluters, and you'll minimize the impact.

Great guide, btw.

Almost 2500 keys have been handed out at the time of this message, so keys are getting through. Still, we apologize for the difficulty some of you are experiencing.

I co-reviewed this game with Gunky, and this bit of misinfo was actually my fault. I did play a chunk of D3, and upon logging into D3 again, you guys are right, the same mechanic is in the Diablo series. My apologies.

What I meant to say is that there's something about D3 that deadens my hand, and whatever doesn't seem to be present in T2. I can play T2 for hours on end, but can only take about 15 minutes of D3 at a shot. I think it might be that the pace of gameplay is slower at comparable difficulty settings, and holding down the mouse button while standing in one place might be a a recipe for numbness. Or it could be slumpy posture or any of a number of things, I don't know. All I can tell you is that this is my experience, and your mileage may well vary.

Anyway, I'll make an edit in the review, and since this isn't a score-changing issue, I hope we can leave it at that. Thanks for your comments!
