I am actually really excited about this game and how their "Single Server" technology works. It doesn't matter what server you play on, you can always dynamically switch servers while in game to join your friends.
I really think they need an offline version. Those characters can't be used online, but at least allow offline play in some form. I have a friend in the navy that just got D3 and just had to go out to sea. When out there you need some downtime, and D3 isn't an option because it requires Internet connection.
This is actually really awesome. I don't play Rift but I wish SWTOR had an app like this, at least to see who of your guild mates are currently online and be able to chat with them. Rift is really doing an impressive job.
I know it got a friend of mine who used to play to sign up again, so I think it will work at least somewhat. I know I will be playing for the next year so I signed up for it too since my GF loves it. It's a pretty smart move on their part.
I really think Blizzard already sees the demise of WoW coming so I don't think SW:TOR will be a good thing for it. They are already working on another MMO and I think their next MMO will be a hit but, I don't think that they will do anything more to make WoW more competitive in the market.
