For what it's worth I was basing my "impressions" here on what I experienced in a very small window of time with the thief. I obviously mistook the constant stream of "Not Enough Profession Specific Resources" popping up on screen to mean I needed to build resources, not wait for them to replenish on their own.

It's unfortunate that people on GW2-guru chose to call me out for "bad journalism" when I'd even gone on those forums to express that I had clearly made a mistake here. But rather than anyone bothering to accept that I was left with the wrong "impression" of the profession, I'm called an assmaggot here, and claimed to be hurting the game even though I've been a very, very vocally positive supporter of Anet and everything I've seen for GW2 so far.

Oh well.

I'm cutting the "offending" portion out of the article completely so it will no longer get everyone's panties all bunched up.

This sounds great right up until the part about it being a premium service.

Instead of continuing to add piles of individual paid services, they should just introduce a second subscription tier option that bundles it all together.

While playing the thief, as I was learning the various weapon skills, unless I had the 5 Initiative built up to use the skill in slot 3 I got repeated on-screen and chat box messages alerting me, "Not Enough Profession Specific Resources". I do have video of this but the audio quality isn't that great so I opted to not embed it in the article.

At any rate, unless I completely misunderstood where the on-screen / chat spam was coming from, it was because I had to use my small attacks (slots 1,2,4,5) to build enough initiative to use the big attack (slot 3) which is where the A>B thing comes from. This is also consistent across different weapon sets I tried.

I can understand why they don't want to add basic player housing: it doesn't fit neatly into the endgame gear grind that is all the game is about anymore.

They could, however, add guild halls and make it work perfectly with the existing game. They've already turned guilds - a fun social experience - into what amounts to another reputation grind, so why not just extend the grind to include guild halls? That way guilds could have a place to gather and port to raids, but anything beyond basic functions would be things you have to spend a zillion hours to earn. That keeps the grind-style endgame concept intact, and opens up plenty of other gameplay possibilities.

For example, why not make guild halls function like they do in Guild Wars? Aka, they have member perks, but then are also used for PvP maps. I'm still amazed that other devcos haven't ganked that concept from ArenaNet yet.

I'm reserving judgment until I get to see the Thief in action next week, but from the video footage I've seen I will say I'm a bit disappointed that they used a WoW style combo point system. I've always hated that as a 'resource' mechanic, and much MUCH preferred the actual combos of the GW assassins. Sadly though, it seems that way too many class designers feel otherwise, so just about any 'rogue' type class tends to use some form of combo points anymore.
