I'm a veteran game player and still waiting for a really good sandbox game, you know, where the fun is just in playing the game and leveling is a side reward, and end game isn't needed.
In the forum for Heroes Journey last year, there was a running debate about this very thing. The devs wanted to add a tier of play for players to buy better looking armor and other items that didn't effect basic gameplay. Some players liked it, those who could afford it. Most didn't like it and expressed themselves well, pointing to the "conceived" imbalances it would create. The devs never said one way or the other whether it would be included. Consequently, they lost a lot of player interest.
