I'm not tired of fantasy, just the lack of imagination in creating new races. Also, I'm tired of every fantasy being based on tank, mage and healer. But, as a friend of mine pointed out, we players who have been through a few online games may feel jaded, but the new players that keep joining keep the older fantasy type games going. I would also welcome a good sci-fi game with some meat in it. SWG once seemed to promise that, but didn't follow through well enough. Some of the sandbox fun was great, though.
I disagree that the focus should be on the end-game. That is passe thinking. A game that keeps as many players interested as possible with enough variety, including open-end game, is the game that keeps it's players. If the developers can't realistically keep up with the demand for new content, then how does Guild Wars do it, or other games that keep adding new expansions such as Dark Age of Camelot. EQ and EQ2 also, etc. If a game is a large "sand box" type of game, where players make friends, establish regular groups and guilds, they often do create enough for themselves to keep them busy. The powergamers will level fast and then soon move on to the next challenging game. So why concentrate on content for them?
Yay! Way to go Boomjack! Tell it like it is. I have no doubt Vanguard will pull in players, but not as many experienced players, except for the fans and powergamers who have been so loudly making demands that the game meets their criteria. I haven't heard anything good at all from beta testers, those who quit or braved telling it like it is.
There are many good games soon to be released; we don't need another EQ. I'm playing Saga of Ryzom and plan to try Chronicles of Spellborn this Fall and Hero's Journey next year. I don't need the most popular, most players, game anymore. I like a more mature, helpful, friendly atmosphere.
Someday there may be real immersion in online games. In the meantime, no procreation! Children are unneeded since nobody ever really dies. Children would overpopulate the servers. hehe

I made an erroneous post that I can't find now. I misread the Vanguard article on gold farming, sorry.
