  • On the eve of its launch, IGN has gathered a few more details about Saga of Heroes.

    IGN shares their thoughts with us about the soon to be released Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

    Part of what differentiates Vanguard from other MMOs is its community aspect. Players are encouraged to work with others and build a community together. You can build your own house and decorate it with trophies won while questing. Then you can invite other players over to show off your stuff. You can make your house either public or private, with permissions available to be doled out to those you deem worthy.

    I've been following the progress of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes for what seems like years now. As the MMO lovechild of both Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler (the geniuses behind EverQuest), one could argue that it's worth the wait just to see what the guys that just about invented the genre come up with. Harried by publisher issues and an overzealous fanbase, it has been a bumpy road for the folks at Sigil, but now that Vanguard has opened its doors to FilePlanet subscribers (click this link to go check it out), we thought it was a good time to take a look at the changes the game has undergone since the earliest days of the closed beta.

  • Vanguard Preview has added their thoughts to the round of previews today.

    I'm one of those people who is a fan of MMO's in general. If it has multiple people playing together online, I'll probably at least try it. It was Christmas seven years ago that my husband and I bought one another our first MMO, his and hers copies of Everquest, and I've been hooked on MMO's ever since. So when we had an opportunity to join Vanguard beta and take an early look at the game, I was more than a little excited. I knew enough about the game and Brad McQuaid to know that this game had potential to take me back to those glory days of my first MMO.

  • First Impressions has posted a preview of Vanguard:Saga of Heroes on their site today.

    Perhaps, on reflection, Sigil Games might feel that putting the word "Saga" into the name was asking for trouble. Calling a game a "Saga" of anything, aside from inviting silly jokes about old age pensioners that don't play very well beyond England's shores, also practically guarantees that your development process will indeed become a Saga - a long, drawn out and somewhat painful experience abounding with whispered half-truths and vague generalisations. Still - even given the number of misconceptions and conflicting views which exist on the topic of Vanguard, Sigil's developers can at least count themselves lucky that they avoided the "Forever" pitfall, eh?

  • Nick Parkinson talks about changes with the New Year

    Stratics has posted an interview with Nick Parkinson from Sigil Games Online today. Keep reading to see what they were able to learn.

    A number of significant changes have come about with Vanguard in the last week, the biggest is the announcement that Beta 5 is coming soon. Beta 5 is to start in early January. This stage is the last planned beta stage for Vanguard before release. Before this announcement we asked a series of questions about how Vanguard got started, what makes it unique, and how it evolves the mmo genre. Nick Parkinson, Sigil Online Games Community Manager, forwarded these answers to us. I think this one line from the interview sums up Vanguard: “Vanguard isn’t a hard-core game or a casual game, it’s a fun game.”

  • Interview with Salim Grant

    Vanguard Spheres has posted a new interview with Salim Grant. He's the head crafting guru at Sigil Games Online...and yes that *is* a technical term so there!

    Mel: In the past, some MMOs have had excellent, and also complex, crafting systems only completely revamped after a considerable amount of time. Do you plan to keep crafting complex even if some people complain?

    Silius: We have taken cues from testers, players of other games, and our own experiences in that department and we streamlined our level of complexity many times already. What we have now is what we feel will work just fine. Of course, most people never plan to have to completely revamp something.

    I’m the guy behind the curtain. Sometimes I make pretty stuff, other times the guys just laugh at me.

    How did you get your start at Sigil?
    After months of Brad pleading with me, I decided to cut him a break and help him out. Or was that the other way around? I forget. In any case I’m here now and I don’t even get gas money!

    There was a lot of excitement in the MMORPG community a few years ago when it was announced that several core members of the original Everquest development team had decided to form their own studio called Sigil Games. Early in 2007, the company's long awaited first game, the fantasy MMORPG Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, is scheduled to be released. So will this game make a mark on the already crowded genre?
