Vanguard: Saga of Heroes Interviews

  • An Interview with the Developers of Vanguard

In all the hustle and bustle of GDC, it's easy to lose track of the games that aren't "upcoming" or "on the horizon". The Ten Ton Hammer team was careful to cover all the bases, and our latest interview focuses on Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, a game that was released earlier this year. We sat down with several members of the Sigil team - Jeff Butler, April Jones, and Ryan Elam - to find out what the future holds for Vanguard and MMOs in general.

When asked what the biggest challenge the team was facing at the moment, one thing sprang to Jeff Butler's mind: Settling the game into the market. "To me, settling a game into the market means that we can look at the game and are able to compare it with what the consumer finds palatable," he said. "We know that Vanguard was always a game that was aimed at people who tended to like a more challenging experience than World of Warcraft. So without alienating the other players who chose Vanguard, we need to discover what elements of Vanguard do not sit well with those core gamers."

  • GDC 2007: Vanguard Look Forward

WarCry has posted this interview with the makers of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes from GDC.

Along with the move to implement some form of teleportation, Sigil will be looking to increase the experience rewards in the game, as well as reduce the experience penalty upon death. Players are currently behind the intended curve of advancement, moving slower than Sigil intended. According to Jeff Butler, there is a fine line between making a game that is not challenging and one that is too challenging

  • Fantasy Artist Keith Parkinson: An Interview With His Son Nick

WarCry has posted this interesting interview today. They ask about reknown fantasy artist Keith Parkinson's work with answers by his son Nick.

Every gamer and fan of fantasy certainly knows Keith Parkinson's art. He was the man behind the original EverQuest's iconic cover art, as well as a cover artist for fantasy authors like Margaret Weiss, Tracy Hickman and Terry Brooks. Parkinson later went on to become the Art Director for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

  • Nick Parkinson Interview at Warcry has posted an interview with Nick Parkinson that talks about the upcoming release of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

WarCry Network: Of the issues left to solve, what do you feel is your biggest hurdle between today and the launch of your game?

Nick Parkinson: Performance and server stability are the big ones, as they usually are at this stage in development for any MMO. Some of this stuff you just can't test properly until you've got the kind of numbers that only come with late phases of beta. So there's still some kinks to be worked out in this area, but we're not too worried.

  • CES Pre-Launch Chat with Brad McQuaid and Paul Luna had a chance to sit and talk with Brad and Paul at CES. Keep reading to see what they were able to learn!

With their marketing collaboration with SoE, Brad McQuaid and Paul Luna of Sigil Games showed Vanguard: Saga of Heroes at CES 2007 at invited press appointments. After introductions, we chatted about our gaming history and when Paul asked if I were familiar with Brad, my answer was tongue in cheek as I replied that I was familiar with Aradune, a wood-elf ranger in EverQuest who wore green splint mail and implied that he hacked Soulfire – the Paladin epic weapon so he could wield it.

  • Nick Parkinson talks about changes with the New Year

Stratics has posted an interview with Nick Parkinson from Sigil Games Online today. Keep reading to see what they were able to learn.

A number of significant changes have come about with Vanguard in the last week, the biggest is the announcement that Beta 5 is coming soon. Beta 5 is to start in early January. This stage is the last planned beta stage for Vanguard before release. Before this announcement we asked a series of questions about how Vanguard got started, what makes it unique, and how it evolves the mmo genre. Nick Parkinson, Sigil Online Games Community Manager, forwarded these answers to us. I think this one line from the interview sums up Vanguard: “Vanguard isn’t a hard-core game or a casual game, it’s a fun game.”

  • Interview with Salim Grant

Vanguard Spheres has posted a new interview with Salim Grant. He's the head crafting guru at Sigil Games Online...and yes that *is* a technical term so there!

Mel: In the past, some MMOs have had excellent, and also complex, crafting systems only completely revamped after a considerable amount of time. Do you plan to keep crafting complex even if some people complain?

Silius: We have taken cues from testers, players of other games, and our own experiences in that department and we streamlined our level of complexity many times already. What we have now is what we feel will work just fine. Of course, most people never plan to have to completely revamp something.

The official site for Vanguard Saga of Heroes has been updated with another in the weeklty series of employee spotlights...

Who are you and what do you do?
I’m the guy behind the curtain. Sometimes I make pretty stuff, other times the guys just laugh at me.

How did you get your start at Sigil?
After months of Brad pleading with me, I decided to cut him a break and help him out. Or was that the other way around? I forget. In any case I’m here now and I don’t even get gas money!

  • Interview: Nick Parkinson on the Vanguard Pre-Order

I had the opportunity to chat briefly with Nick "Glip the Gnome" Parkinson, Community Manager for Sigil Games Online, about the recently announced Vanguard: Saga of Heroes pre-order package. There's been a bit of confusion about what the pre-order contains, and whether or not people who pre-order online will be entitled to the same benefits as those who purchase the physical pre-order box. Check out the interview and get in the know!
