Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) developed by Sigil Games Online, and co-published by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). SOE purchased the rights to the game in late 2006 and a portion of the original Sigil team went to work on the game at the SOE San Diego studios.

Among the novelties that the seamless world of Telon boasts are numerous mounts (including flying mounts), a crafting system through which players contribute to the building of a house or a ship on player-owned land, dozens of adventuring, artisan, and diplomat classes, and a unique TCG-style diplomacy mini-game.

SOE announced in March 2012 that Vanguard would be going free-to-play. On August 7th, 2012, SOE soft launched Vanguard's free-to-play model.

  • A Vanguard Double Feature

Merriandra updates her popular Vanguard-themed fanfiction series "Rain and Roses" with episode IV (and it's sure not to disappoint like that other Episode IV).

Her eyes opened, unfocused, looking at the past, not the present. The next would be the hardest, the actual telling. Now it was just a disconnected narrative, as if she were still in the army and giving a report on the day’s work. He noticed that her speech didn’t slip into the patterns of her home. No, instead her words were without accent or dialect.

Help yourself to more Merriandra "Rain and Roses" goodness at Vanguard - TenTonHammer.

And, don't miss the latest artwork from Niborea:

As he scouted ahead he caught a glimpse of something out of place. Proceeding causiously, the ranger bend down to investigate further. He would need to tell the others he had found the rare herb they'd been serching days for. He didn't mind, they paid him well for his time and expert tracking skills. He'd let the others handle things from here, for he knew that even though it looked harmless, it could mean instant death if the leaves touched the skin.

  • Not your average gamer?

What is the average gamer? Is it the stereotypical teenage boy? Years ago this would have been the case but today it's hard to say who the typical gamer is.

The gaming community has developed immensely over the past 10 years. It is becoming less taboo to admit that you enjoy gaming as a pastime. No longer do those men and yes women feel like they are in the minority if they don't fit the days gone by profile of the teenage gamer.

AnomalousSilence set out to find those "non-average" gamers and has brought us an interview with four very diverse individuals.

These interviews include an older gamer, a female gamer, a college and working gamer, and a military gamer. I hope you enjoy learning about these individuals as much as I did!

  • That's entertainment!

No it's not the 1974 presenation of MGM actors like Gene Kelly,Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra sharing their favourite musical moments from the studio's 50 year history. It's Mercurie's look into how MMO's provide entertainment within the game itself.

He looks at what type of entertainment could/should exsist for characters in the world of Telon.

“What sort of entertainments should exist in a fantasy oriented MMORPG such as Vanguard: Saga of Heroes?” My own thought is that in a world which promises to be roughly equivalent to our own medieval era, the entertainments should be roughly equivalent to those that existed in our own Middle Ages.

  • There are new screenshots for Vanguard at Vanguard Crafters.

Someone mentioned on the other day that Vanguard was taking on a WoW'ish look. Methinks that they're blind. It still has that fantasy realistic look that the Sigil team is known for.

  • Guild games!

Punting Gnomes, bardic sing-a-longs, or simply enjoying the company of your guild mates. What do you like to do to spend your down time from raiding? Is there any value in playing games within your favorite MMO? Can it actually make your raiding better?

Lady Sirse, from the Vanguard - TenTonHammer staff, gives her take on keeping the game a game, from within your favorite MMO. She talks about this topic from the standpoint of a guild leader.

Personally, I have always been drawn more towards the family/ light raiding type guilds that are more about getting to know your guildmates, not getting your uber gear. The guild I eventually created was known for being a small but effective strike team for raids. But we were also known for something else…our Guild Games.

  • Why would you solo in an MMORPG?

At Vanguard - TenTonHammer, Merriandra asks the question -"When there are so many options for meeting and interacting with others in so many different games, why would anyone choose to solo?".

I sometimes wonder if the type of player who doesn’t like to rely on others is really suited for the kinds of online games that are being developed and succeeding in the MMO marketplace. Has the term MMORPG lost its significance for these individuals? Those who craft, or play alternate characters, or run a solo mission ever now and then are still part of a larger culture that depends on teamwork and cooperation. It takes more than one person to make a guild into more than a titular organization, and it takes more than one crafter to establish a successful, player-driven market.

  • Drawing Comparisons

Realistic, cartoonish, anime...those describe a few ways graphics have gone in MMO's over the years, and we all have our favorites. How appealing the graphics are or are not seems to get those most criticism fairly early on, after all we are a very visual society.

An important part of any computer game, whether a MMORPG or some other
sort of computer game, is its graphics. After all, a game’s graphics act as the visual representation of that particular game’s world.

At the Vanguard - TenTonHammer community site, Mercurie "looks" over this phenomenon in Drawing Comparisons, at Vanguard - TenTonHammer. Read and find out how far graphics have come and where they may be headed.
