At the Vanguard - Ten Ton Hammer community site, AnomalousSilence continues his series, this week taking a look at the different types of role-playing and role-players in today's MMO's.

While role-playing as a whole, along with the players who choose to participate, cannot be categorized specifically, the following are some general categories by which many role-players can be described.

  • Tuesday's Take - Are you hardcore enough for Vanguard?

The month of May has brought us the question; “Hardcore versus casual, how do YOU play, and do you feel the game will accommodate your play style?”

We've heard from several other writers as they have given their take, today Merriandra gives us hers. Having started out as a relunctent MMO player she has quickly found her way and gives us insight into what kind of gamer she really is.

I certainly took a more long-and-winding-road approach: the journey was half the fun, but I still kept asking “are we there yet”? I think my then-boyfriend reached fifty at least six months before I did. I was always struggling to get that last level before the next expansion. I also exhibited the distinct signs of a split personality.

  • Interview with a former Vanguard Community Manager

Nicole may not be a vampire but she sure has some bite. Lady Sirse was able to interview Nicole "Awenyddion" Hamlett, Vanguard @'s former Community Manager. She was able to get Nicole's views on how Sigil seemed to be doing at E3 as well as her impressions of the game itself.

She told me that she is “very jaded now with these games but I'm really really excited for Vanguard. I feel like it will bring that feeling of community that so many games are missing now.”

Check it out for yourself at Vanguard - TenTonHammer.

  • The Architecture of A World: Zoned or Seamless?

In what is becoming a Friday tradition at Vanguard @ Ten Ton Hammer, staff writer Mercurie has put some thoughts on virtual paper for us in what is being called Mercurial Thoughts. This week Mercurie looks at how MMO worlds are set up.

Speaking from my own admittedly limited experience, I must also say that I don’t care too much for traveling from zone to zone. In Dark Age of Camelot, going to different zones often means one’s character will have to make use of a portal. One enters the portal and suddenly one is in an entirely different region of the world. I’ve always found this a bit disconcerting myself...

  • Whoooo are ya? Ooo oo. Ooo oo.

In his continuing look at role-play, Anomalous Silence, talks today about how to figure out the personality and history of your character.

So… now what? You’ve debated over whether to join a PvP or PvE role-playing server. You’ve tested the various servers and server forums, and have analyzed the overall quality of these same servers. You’ve picked your server and are ready, finally, to play. What next? Character creation of course! This goes far, far beyond the simple physical appearance of your avatar (the selection of which, in Vanguard, can undoubtedly take hours or even days). In order to properly role-play on a role-playing server, and to maximize your experience, you must develop an in-depth personality and background for your character.

What are you waiting for? Check out AnomalousSilence's great article at Vanguard - Ten Ton Hammer.

  • Mercurie searches his thoughts and feelings on the recent decision by Sigil Games Online to buy back their publishing rights from Microsoft and enter into a joint effort with Sony Online Entertainment to publish Vanguard, Saga of Heroes.

It does seem to me that reaction to this announcement has been decidedly mixed. The majority of people I know have a “wait and see” attitude. They have no strong feeling either way and are willing to give SOE a chance. Yet others absolutely hate the idea, and there are a few who have actually decided not to play Vanguard.

  • Box Art for Vanguard, Saga of Heroes.

Brad McQuaid replied in regards to the box art

Before Keith passed away, but when it was obvious he wasn't going to be able to paint the cover, he let us know that he wanted Donato to do the art for the box.

What Donato did was and is amazing. He painted a large piece, of which the left section is used for the front of the box (just like Keith did with EQ). But what he did was paint the left side more in Keith's style, in homage to Keith, and then the painting blends nicely to his style as you move to the right.

Normally an artist won't do this -- if you ask them to paint in another person's style, they're not to interested. But this was a special case, something in homage to Keith, and Donato pulled it of even better than my wildest dreams.

Also, if you look at the front cover and see a character you don't recognize there... that's Keith, immortalized on the front of Vanguard's box.

I had a feeling that was supposed to be Keith on the box when I saw it, I think it's a great way to immortalize a great artist and human being. Nice work Donato!

  • Another round in the Role-Playing series by AnomalousSilence. Today he looks at selecting a server type to begin your RPing adventure. Which server should you choose? There are Player vs Enviroment servers, Player vs Player servers, and Role-Playing Preffered servers. Which is right for your Role-Playing type?

For pure role-playing purposes, it is obvious which server you would choose based on the above examples: the world used in the first example with open PvP. This is, sadly, not really a possible outcome because there is no single server that is perfect in role-playing. Thus, the decision to join either a PvP-RP or a PvE-RP server should be based on both the role-playing qualities and the negative, /OOC qualities.

Check back next week when he talks character creation

  • The Core...not "appeal"

OK ok,aside from my lame attempt at a joke.....Hardcore? Casual? What game hasn't come out that doesn't cater to one group or the other? Sure all types may be in the game playing but the dynamics of the game are generally centered around one type.

AnomalousSilence gives his take on the subject of playstyle. He looks at Vanguard's approach to the "Core" player and what that will mean for all player types.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes will be my future home, one where I can make new friends and an online family of sorts, one where I can stay with for years and be happy. I had already planned on playing Vanguard: Saga of Heroes for an extended period of time, hopefully upwards of a decade or even longer. With the amazing game play styled for the “core” gamer, though, the game might last me even longer than I had hoped, given my play style and MMORPG preferences.
