Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

  • Rain and Roses, Part 2

An innocent comment finds Wil feigning off an onslaught of punches. What could have transpired to boil Renna's blood so? Read more in Part II of Rain and Roses by Merriandra, a writer from our Vanguard - TenTonHammer community.

Instead of smiling, he nodded. For so long now, he had been willing to hold his tongue, but he decided that maybe now was the time to push a little. After all, the color had risen in Renna’s sallow cheeks and her eyes were blazing with indignation.

  • Combat isn't the only thing to do in an MMORPG!

Ever get tired of hunting the same foes through the same dark forest? Tired of wielding that short sword or dagger? Merriandra, from the Vanguard - TenTonHammer site, shares with us some secrets to relieving that boredom in Boredom Busters.

When I was the co-leader of a guild, I organized a scavenger hunt. I took one of my lowest-level characters and I killed her in creative ways all over Norrath. I left one semi-precious object on each corpse, and then I gave clues to guild members who raced off to find Search’s corpses. The first person to reach each poor, mutilated body shouted out their name, their zone, and the corpse location in guildchat and I gave consent, which, at the time, allowed the lucky individual to loot the corpse.

  • Speculating on Vanguard's Pace of Advancement

Across the Ten Ton Hammer network, writers are taking a look at the pace of current MMOs. How fast do you go through the content of your favorite game? Do you rush through levels with barely a look to the left or right? Are you the type that takes months or years to make the end levels, taking your time to try out all the content you can?

Here at Vanguard Ten Ton Hammer, we don't have the joy of seeing the pace of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes yet. This didn't stop Anomalous Silence from giving us a look at things from his perspective.

Within any MMORPG is there are certain key elements: perhaps foremost among these elements is the pace of advancement. It is an aspect that can and should be handled with great care. The speed of advancement can dictate whether a player gets a feeling of accomplishment or a feeling of not accomplishing anything, whether that player sees the pace of gameplay as rushed or slowly inching along.

What does he forsee for the game to come? What hints from the developers have given a clue to what we can expect? Read his article at Vanguard - TenTonHammer!

This week's piece depicts the Blood Mage. Not much is known about this class other than they are among the Healing Classes and, it is said, they will use thier own health or that of their enemies to heal their companions.

I hope you enjoy this week's piece and as always you can view all previous works at Vanguard - TenTonHammer.

  • Springtime for Vanguard...

Merriandra, one of the great writers at the Vanguard - TenTonhammer community site, has graced us with some great fan fiction. Rain and Roses begins in a tavern called The Weary Arms in New Targonor.

It was true enough, she thought, that the day had dawned bright with more than the prospect of sunshine. At mid-morning, several merchant ships dropped anchor in the harbor, arrivals spurred by the advent of fair weather. The Weary Arms had seen a steady trade, brisk enough so that she had been unable allow herself even a moment for thoughts of her past, or her future.

    Each Wednesday the story continues...

  • Druids Grove has an interview with Associate Designer Michael Mann.

    2. What differentiates druids from the other arcane casting classes? How are they unique?
The Druid is unique from other arcane casters in many ways. Not only does he have the ability to cast some of the highest damage spells in the game, he has a small healing capability and a strong line up of support abilities. On top of this he has the ability to summon natural elementals to fight for his cause. The elementals aren’t always around and go back to the earth once their fight is over, but it really pulls you into the feeling that you are actually communicating with nature and that is very unique.

  • Vanguard's "Interest Rates"

This month our Tuesday's Takes will look at what people see as the entertainment in their favorite MMO. AnomalousSilence has the first article, titled Interest Rates

It is moments like these, among other things, that truly make our MMORPG experience unique, compelling, and entertaining. It isn’t hacking down everything in sight, acquiring the best items and the most gold, or being a part of the largest raiding guild on your server. While these things can also add to the fun, waiting for a room to pop and talking to your buddy, being in a wonderful guild, and being a part of the community is what honestly creates the entire environment for the MMORPG.

  • This just in... (literally!)

Lady Sirse, from our Vanguard @ TenTonHammer community site, had a chance a to sit down and talk with Senior Game Designer Darrin McPherson, better known as Talisker to most of the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes Community, at Fanguard last January. He shared some insight into two of the unique classes planned to debut in this much anticipated game. Darrin and Lady Sirse spoke about the Dread Knight and the Disciple...

We moved on to chat about the Dread Knight. These two words are capable of sparking speculation in historic proportions. Happy to have a chance to dispel some of the growing misconceptions, Darrin said, “Think of Batman, or of Punisher, they are similar to the Dread Knight. They do what it takes to get the job done and then go back to everyday life. They aren’t evil per say, they just do what it takes.”

Find out some of the things planned for these classes and read the full exclusive interview with Sigil's Darrin McPherson.

Be sure to take a look back through all the other coverage from January's Fanguard in San Diego brought to you by Lady Sirse and Niborea of Vanguard - TenTonHammer!

  • Is oneupmanship the only theme that plays in today's MMOs?

Competition, is it what drives today's MMO players to keep playing? How much competition is healthy, and what forms of competition are beneficial, as MMO devs try to keep their playerbase coming back for more?

The fact that competition keeps the average player coming back to a virtual world, again and again, seems obvious, but it’s not always about the race to attain the highest level or conquer the most difficult zone.
