Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

  • One final look at "the guild behind the game."

Ever feel naked when you first enter and MMO? Now get your mind out of the gutter, I don't mean in that way. I'm talking about the log in and no one to chat with, no one to help with a quest or question.

Merriandra knows just what I'm talking about and discusses the importance of a guild for a character and community development in her final installment of her Guild Beyond the Game series at Vanguard - TenTonHammer.

  • PvP versus PvE?

Today's article wraps up this month's Tuesday's Take highly debated topic of whether Sigil should heavily integrate player-killing as a form of character advancement, or concentrate on cooperative player vs. environment (PvE) gameplay.

For me the appeal of a PvE environment lies in the cooperation with other characters in completing quests. The only opponents one might face are the various mobs that might get in one's way. For me the appeal in PvP lies in the competition with other players and the threat of being attacked at any moment. I suppose one way of looking at it is PvE is like The Hobbit. The only real threats come primarily from outsiders. On the other hand, PvP is like Sin City. Threats can come from, well, anyone...

  • A Double Shot of Vanguard Pleasure

First up, Niborea takes a good hard look at classes. From the first 3 basic classes in the original D&D to the many varieties that today's MMOs offer, Mercurie takes a look at these traditional classes compared to Vanguard's unique class structure.

Naturally, if Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is to be successful, or if it is to be different from other MMOs, it would have to solve this problem of any given class being preferable over others. For that reason, the classes are somewhat interdependent on each other within Vanguard. This can be seen in the way that classes are set up in the game.

And don't miss Niborea's latest Vanguard fanart! This week at Vanguard - TenTonHammer she presents a halfling bard complete with lute, rolling hills, and windmill!

  • Is your guild in it for the long haul?

At the Vanguard - TenTonHammer community site, Merriandra continues her series on guilds today with a look at what helps guilds stand the test of time.

There are certain factors that seem to define a guild, and to determine the chances of that particular guild for success or failure. Of course, nobody sets out to establish an organization, either online or in the real world, with failure as a goal.
Still, there are four very basic components of a guild that define the ability of the people gathered under a common name to overcome obstacles and build a strong foundation.

  • Virtual friends, let me introduce you to the real world.
Our Vanguard: Saga of Heroes community team adds to their already fantastic look at what it takes to create and maintain a successful guild.

"There are certain factors that seem to define a guild, and to determine the chances of that particular guild for success or failure. Of course, nobody sets out to establish an organization, either online or in the real world, with failure as a goal. Still, there are four very basic components of a guild that define the ability of the people gathered under a common name to overcome obstacles and build a strong foundation. These for components include the Guild Structure; Guild Leadership; Guild Membership; and In-Game Support. "

  • How will Vanguard handle your demise?

It's a bit morbid around the network today, death is topic of discussion.

Birds chirping high above and the rustle of leaves can be heard as I emerge from the tunnel that leads to the safety of home. My long robe sways slightly as the breeze catches the hem. I causously make my way down the hill to a well worn path. A slight buzzing can be heard, turning to my right I find a huge wasp.
Murmuring the incantation the wasp begins to choke. Angrily he begins to sting me, using my staff I begin to beat upon it until it falls lifeless to the ground. Victory! “Thwap” “Ouch! “Thawp” Turning I find myself face to face with an angry orc. My palms begin to sweat as I try to murmur the incantation, without success. In a few well placed blows he has me battered and beaten upon the grass, life slipping away.”

At Vanguard - Ten Ton Hammer, Niborea takes a look at her experiences with death in EQ and how it is currently being handled in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

  • What makes Vanguard different?

At Vanguard - DDO, Mercurie looks at the differences Vanguard will have above the other MMO's currently on the market and how they will help shape the very world of Telon.

One major difference between Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and other MMORPGs that players might notice right away is the complexity of its world. It is meant to be seamless, without any limit on how high or how deep one can go. Vanguard even has its own weather. At any given moment it might be raining or snowing. Storms are even possible. And while many games simply pattern their world after medieval Europe, in Vanguard there will be areas influenced by Persia, Egypt, the Mayans, and so on.

Vanguard looks to make its mark, and Merriandra tells us how. Check out Differences Make the Virtual World Go 'Round at Vanguard - TenTonHammer.

  • Gaming within a guild

On the Vanguard @ TenTonHammer community site, Merriandra begins her 5 part series today on the history of guilds with The Guild Beyond The Game:

Once upon a time, a guild leader who moved away from a city or town would truly have left his guild members physically and socially behind. Just as, in the early years of the MMORPG, a guild leader’s departure from a virtual world almost inevitably signaled the loss of contact with his or her guild members

  • AnomalousSilence takes a look at the differences between gameplay and roleplay in the world of Telon.

Try to imagine yourself, not in Vanguard, but in Telon. You are a tall, lithe high elf strolling through the forests bordering Leth Nurae. To the left of you is a dark figure, obviously out of place within this peaceful habitat. Turning your head to more closely regard this newcomer, you are utterly repulsed to see a Dark Elf! Only adding to the sheer hatred is the monstrous undead creation closely following this creature of evil, whose hair is long and white with eyes like deep, black pits. This elf smiles at you and touches a tree. The tree quickly begins to rot and decay.

Have yourself an eyefull of this week's Tuesday Take editorial at Vanguard - TenTonHammer.
