Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

  • The Vanguard take on fluff content.

Our editorial topic this week is non-adventuring, "fluff" content. While cantankerous ol' Ethec says fluff is just padding for a poorly-made game, Lady Sirse on the Vanguard - TenTonHammer site is all for it in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Will so-called fluff define the next-generation of MMOGs?

Houses, clothing, crafting, mounts, unique travel modes and even quests could all to a point be called the fluff of MMOs. Is fluff such a bad thing? I think perhaps it is exactly this type of content that draws fans by the million to the genre.

  • Offensive Fighters?

What Fighters who offend us with their ...aroma, their grizzly manners? No, not that type of offensive...the type that deal the damage and dodge around the bigger hit absorbing tanks. These fighters, known as light tanks, are found in every MMO out there. Martuk, in part 2 of his Know Your Role series, tells us what we might see in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes for this group that includes Rangers, Rogues and more.

Vanguard will have a variety of Offensive Fighters for players to choose from. Some of these classes have been announced, but, like most things during the beta phase of any game, could change at the developers' discretion. The Offensive Fighter classes that have been announced include: Bards, Berserkers, Monks, Rangers, and Rogues. These classes all have roots in Everquest, but their Vanguard counterparts could be very different.

  • Into the sunset...

Niborea's editoral today on the Vanguard - TenTonHammer site is a loving tribute to her father, who recently passed on after an extended illness.

    From Niborea:

Todays content strays from the norm and I hope you will indulge me.

On Tuesday my father passed away after an extended illness with a rare dementia. Dementia is a nasty illness, claiming ones essense long before taking their life.

Into the Sunset is my tribute to him, a true "knight in shining armor."

  • If you don't have something nice to play...

Merriandra continues her stroll down memory lane with a look back at socialization in MMOs, and how anonymity affects online relationships.

It wasn't long before the paladin and the ranger were deep in conversation, both while walking through the land of Norrath, and in the real world, on the telephone. Nor was it long before the paladin's armor began to lose its sheen, particularly in the eyes the ranger's companions. He would be rude and abrupt until the young ranger arrived, and then his demeanor would change. If she wasn't on time, he displayed quite a temper. The young ranger never saw the dark moods of her knight-in-shining-armor, and so, for a brief time, she enjoyed his company.

A look at accidental boors, habitual offenders, and virtual offenders... the dark side of the MMO community as described by Merriandra of our Vanguard @ TenTonHammer community!

  • MMO Marriage Memories

Staff writer Merriandra shares the story of her in-game marriage to her husband in EverQuest. They'd met and married in real life before diving into the game, and Merri went on to marry many other couples as a guide.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered together…" It would have appeared to be an ordinary wedding, but for the twelve foot tall skeletons towering over a giant chess board in the background, behind the wide, manicured lawn where our guests were arrayed. Typical of the Butcherblock Mountains, it was a warm, sunny afternoon. If you could ignore the occasional spider or basilisk, it was an ideal location.

Head over to Vanguard - TenTonHammer to read this engaging take on marriage in MMOs.

  • The Softer Side of Vanguard

Candy hearts and pretty flowers are the common thoughts this time of year. Aunraye of the Vanguard @ TenTonHammer community site joins the other writer's across the network as we look at love in MMOs. She reminds us that not all love is romantic. What does she mean?

There is one thing that seems to be forgotten in all this talk of love too often for my tastes. Friendship and familial love are just as important as that all-consuming romantic swept off your feet love that we focus on this time of year...

This is true in real life and in MMO's. What game would be complete without your best friend? You raid together, craft together, and adventure together. The world is your oyster and you have had a big lunch of them, together! You have guild mates, and if you are lucky you care deeply for them. After all in an ideal world they are your mmo best friends. Just like ideally your roommates and club mates in the real world would be your best friends. Nothing is ever perfect but we're talking ideals here. There are times when we are all on our own in the MMO world wandering about practicing new spells, or working on our crafting while we wait for someone to come around. Then you get that tell, "Where are you? Wanna group?" Now this could be annoying except for one thing, it's your MMO buddy.

  • Is it "just a game"?

Merriandra, writer for our Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - TenTonHammer site,
takes a look at the real emotional impact of a virtual world.

"It's only a game." I've used those four words myself, without really thinking about their implications. Once, my boyfriend's guild had carefully strategized and planned for a raid in the Plane of Fear, in pre-expansion Norrath. They had several hours of painstaking success before the entire raid was slaughtered, thanks to a train brought by a careless late arrival. The boyfriend (who is now my husband) slammed his fists on the desk and pushed his chair away, frustrated and angry.

How virtual is your virtual world? Examine your assumptions at Vanguard - TenTonHammer!
