Crytek Transitioning to Focus on Free-to-Play Development

Posted Tue, Jun 12, 2012 by Martuk

Videogamer.com managed to catch up to Crytek CEO Cavet Yerli last week at E3 to get some insight into the future of the developer. With the growing popularity of the free-to-play market, Crytek is hedging their bets that the new model is the way to go by shifting its development focus to online and free-to-play titles.

Crytek has already inked a deal with Trion Worlds to publish their online free-to-play shooter Warface, which is already live in Russia and undergoing beta testing in China. While there’s no solid information on US and EU release, Crytek is already setting its sights on expanding further into the free-to-play market according to Yerli.

"Right now we are in the transitional phase of our company, transitioning from packaged goods games into an entirely free-to-play experience.

"What this entails is that our future, all the new games that we're working on, as well new projects, new platforms and technologies, are designed around free-to-play and online, with the highest quality development."

Yerli wants to create titles with a triple A budget, and implied that future Crytek free-to-play projects will be getting between $10 million and $30 million budgets.

You can read a segment from the interview with Yerli at Videogamer.com. The full interview will be available later this week. In the meantime, check out the latest screenshots and video of Crytek’s Warface from E3 2012.
