CD Projekt Red Talks DLC and DRM for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Anti-DRM developer CD Projekt Red discusses their upcoming third Witcher title, DLC plans, and their stance on DRM for the Xbox One.
CD Projekt Red have been pretty vocal about their anti-DRM approach in the past, so their upcoming title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Microsofts embracement of DRM policies for the Xbox One, something that has been the bane of legit PC gamers for years and done little if anything at all to curb the piracy it was put in place to prevent, seems like an odd mix. But at the end of the day, CD Red is a developer, and developers need money to keep making games. Luckily, CD Projekt Reds work on the consoles is not all bad.
CD Projekt Red boss Marcin Iwinski recently spoke with Rock, Paper, Shotgun to talk about the developers stance on DRM and their DLC plans for The Witcher 3.
Its too early to talk specifics, but definitely all the DLCs and updates will be free, Iwinski told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. Of course, well see what the platform holders will allow what we can do for free [on next-gen consoles]. I mean, there are different business models on consoles. From our standpoint, well definitely do everything we can to deliver the same experience across all platforms.
The one platform that CD Projekt Red does have full control on is the PC, which Iwinski confirmed would be launching the game on day on GoG.com and DRM-free. Iwinski also explained that if a big expansion style of content was ever developed for The Witcher 3 that that content would come with a cost of maybe $15-$20. Tap that on to CD Reds pledge to support the game for years to come and the planned release of the Redkit for Witcher 3 modding, and you have another game from CD Red that could be around for years to come.
So theres a bit of good news for PC gamers as our modding community does love their tools. How that and the future DLC plans will play out on the consoles is still to be determined by the possible policy changes that may occur in the Sony and Microsoft shooting match. But if you're hoping that the console platform holders will let you have anything that they can squeeze a nickel out of for free, don't hold your breath.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be available for the PC, Mac, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 platforms in 2014.
