Wargaming on Microsoft’s “unacceptable” Xbox Cert Process and WoT 360

One of the big surprises to come out of E3 2013 was the announcement made by Microsoft that Wargaming’s flagship World of Tanks title would be making its way to the Xbox 360. If you’re familiar with Microsoft’s certification process, you already know that it can be lengthy and time consuming, both things that can be problematic for an ever-evolving online game like World of Tanks. Speaking with Polygon at PAX Australia, Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi discussed the studio’s ongoing work with Microsoft to address issues with the current certification process.

"The good thing is with online games, sometimes if you screw up, you can do frequent updates," Kislyi told Polygon. "But one of the biggest challenges with Microsoft was the frequency of updates because the QA process and certification process takes an extremely long time. Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play. We are working with them to do quicker updates."

The move to the console space is a new one for World of Tanks, and one that Kislyi admits may have a few stumbling blocks, but it’s a challenge that the developer appears more than ready to meet.

Kislyi also spoke briefly about the recent DRM commentary that’s been circulating within the industry, fueled more by the Xbox One’s initial announcement at E3. Kislyi confessed that Wargaming had abandoned DRM years ago, and he believes that in a few years it simply will not matter given technology advancements.
