Russia is once again amassing an army, but this time in World of Tanks. Wargaming.net recently announced that it has hit a new milestone with more than 2,000,000 registered users for the Russian server alone. Europe and North America are following behind with nearly 1,000,000. The massive influx of players has far exceeded the original launch estimates of about 600,000 worldwide.

War is hell, as one general put it (whose name became the name of a medium tank, ironically) , but war was probably a lot more hellish before tanks. Think about it: first people lined up, charged, and chopped each other with blades and arrows, or lined up and shot at each other in volleys, or dug trenches and shot each other. Courageous, yes, but messy and brutish. Tanks brought mobility and a measure of elegance back to land warfare, and with WWII, war was made mobile again. World of Tanks is all about mobility and firepower, and offers plenty of clan warfare options, crew & tank development, and customization options to keep RPG types and social gamers interested. But how does it all tie together?

  • WOT_Artillery (or Self Propelled Guns) depends on scouts to sight targets

World of Tanks has spent almost a year in beta and during that time many battles have been fought between players that destroyed enough virtual hardware to build several city-states. This week Wargaming.net decided to share some of the numbers and statistics from the last year of testing and just how much damage and destruction players managed to rain down during the last year.

Over 700,000 players in NA and EU managed to fight in more than 5.6 million battles that claimed more than 115 million tanks. That's a lot of scrap-metal. But the fun doesn't stop there. Wargaming.net is giving all players that fought in 1,000 or more battles the M4A2E4 tank in-game for their contribution to the development of the game. Check out the official press release after the break for more statistical goodness.

While the numbers and terms may be intimidating, understanding the basic statistics of World of Tanks is critical to both your offense in knowing your enemy, and defense in knowing your tank's strengths and weaknesses.

Those of us that are familiar with MMOs are no stranger to staring at items and comparing them to what we’ve already got.  In World of Tanks, you don’t have to deal with a million drops for weapons, but a few of them.  But to be honest, choosing between these weapons may be harder than any epics you’ve compared in years!  The statistics don’t always tell the whole story when you look at a tank though, so before you research, you need to know what you’re getting into before you sink your hard earned R&D XP.   Not every tank is as strong (or weak!) as it seems.

Perhaps the finest part of World of Tanks is that each ‘tier’ of tank battle is much different than the others.   As a newbie, you’ll come up against other newbie tanks and the occasional Tier 2 light tank and Tier 2 medium tank.  While mistakes are accepted and expected as a new player, with a few simple strategies you’ll have more fun, get more experience, and get the most credits out of your time spent on the battlefield.   So without further ado, let’s break down the strategies and tactics of the sissy light tanks, which are anything but sissy!
