Riding in Style: Top 5 World of Warcraft Mounts

Updated Tue, Jan 17, 2012 by Mem

World of Warcraft players are as varied as they come. No two are exactly alike coming from different backgrounds, religions, and countries. However, despite these differences there is one fact that you will find binds most WoW players together; we like to ride in style. To achieve this some of us go to great measures, seeking out those that we personally feel are the best looking, the rarest, and sure to turn more than a few heads.

With the Cataclysm expansion winding down and players finding themselves with some extra time on their hands now is the perfect time to add some amazing new WoW mounts to your collection. Not sure where to get started with all the mount choices out there? Check out my own personal top 10 favorite WoW mounts below where you may find something to peak your fancy.

Mem’s Top 10 WoW Mounts

Fossilized Raptor

Mount Requirements Source Mount Movement
Level 40
Journeyman (150) Riding Skill
Archaeology Ground Only

If you love visiting those amazing dinosaur exhibits in the museum and have always dreamed about that set of bones coming alive then this is the perfect mount for you. Coming straight out of a Flintstones cartoon (minus some fleshy bits) this mount is exclusive to those players dedicated enough to take up Archaeology. To obtain this WoW mount Archaeologists must first get the project to pop up (a random event) and then obtain 100 rare fossil fragments which can be quite a task. The good news is that since there appears to be no minimum Archaeology level needed for this WoW mount, even low level Archaeologists can get lucky and have the project to create this WoW mount to pop up. So get out there and as a certain set of song lyrics instruct; open the door, get on the floor....everybody ride the dinosaur!

Crimson Deathcharger

Mount Requirements Source Mount Movement
Level 20
Apprentice (75) Riding Skill
Arthas the Lich King
Heroic Icecrown Citadel
Ground Only

If there ever was a mount worthy of Arthas, one of the ultimate World of Warcraft bad guys of all time, this would be it. An undead, yet not skeletal horse, this WoW mount seems to breathe evil from its nostrils and its mere presence will surely inspire awe in all who see it. Closly resembling the Death Knight class mount (which I’ve always been very fond of) this WoW mount can only be obtained by a raid who takes on and defeats the Lich King. The catch here is that there must be a player in your raid wearing Shadowmourne making this mount doubly appealing since you will get to witness firsthand the end to one of the most epic quest lines currently in game. After the Lich King is dead your raid will get an Unsealed Chest. You will be asked to return this chest to Darion Mograine who will open it and give you the items inside to return to their respective owners to get your rewards, one of which is this mount.

Kor’kron Annihilator

Mount Requirements Source Mount Movement
Level 20
Apprentice (75) Riding Skill
Guild Reputation Ground Only

As you can see this mount is a giant badass scorpion ready to rumble with anyone who crosses its path. Thats right ladies and gentleman you read correctly. Giant. Badass. Scorpion. This mount is so cool that even the Fonze would be jealous. How can you get this WoW mount for your personal collection you ask? While its not as difficult as some of the other rare mounts out there, it still takes some doing to make this WoW mount your own. This mount can be purchased from your guild vendor only after your guild has reached level 25 and you have reached Exalted status with your guild. Sorry Alliance, this is a Horde only mount, however the Alliance version (Golden King) is *almost* just as cool. So get out there and get grinding, but remember, once you make this mount your own don’t lean back as it could prove deadly.

My favorite mount is my tiger from ZG pre- cata.

I'm really surprised no one mentioned Ashes of Al'ar. That has to be my favorite mount in the whole game.

I'm a personal fan of the nether rays you can buy from the shatari skyguard once you reach exalted with them, and i agree with steph, the ashes of alar mount is awesome
