When 38 Studios closed last month, it was surrounded in a barrage of media and political controversy, but the thing often overlooked in this debacle is the families of those working for the studio and what kind of catastrophic affect the studio’s closure has had on their lives. In an open letter to Gamasutra, the wife of a former 38 Studios employee opted explains in great and personal detail of just how devastating the studio’s closure has been on her family and their personal finances. It shows just how the delay in informing employees of the company’s troubles, commitments not honored and the missed payrolls of May have really hit some of the studio’s families very hard.

On the May 16th-21st, my husband returned day after day, told to drive in to work and promised pay, but every day came home empty handed after late meetings and more promises. The longest day was 12 hours and each day we were spending more money on gas and more hope going out the window. During this time, we were also trying to keep our children from worrying while they spent each day hoping to catch a glimpse of their dad before they went to sleep.

Note: While the author of the letter wished to remain anonymous, Gamasutra did confirm the identity and former position of her husband with 38 Studios.
