Love it or hate it, free-to-play is continuing to catch on. And SOE boss John Smedley believes that it has a big future on the console market. Speaking with Games Industry International, Smedley stated that PlayStation 3 players currently make up more than 70% of the DC Universe Online playerbase. And that’s not all; Smedley sees SOE and CCP paving the way for the future of free-to-play on the console market.

"It's 70 per cent of the audience. Free-to-play on PlayStation 3 is huge," he said. "In fact, right now, it's us with DCUO and Free Realms and our friends at CCP with Dust 514 that are going to prove that this market really works.

Smedley went on to discuss how easy the free-to-play model is for console players given that many of them keep their credit card information stored for purchases on the console’s store. He also discussed how SOE tracks other rival games to help measure their own success. Know thy enemy, right?
