Mythic Dungeons are coming. In Patch 6.2 Mythic Dungeons will be introduced to World of Warcraft. What are Mythic Dungeons you ask? Mythic Dungeons are a brand new difficulty of dungeons that will make them more challenging than ever before. Being more difficult, Mythic Dungeons also offer up better loot than we have ever seen in a 5-man dungeon ever before. With all that being said, why do we need this new difficulty? What is the point exactly? We asked the same question and came up with these five reasons as to why we need Mythic Dungeons:

Less Linear Progression

With every expansion it seems like players get more and more options to gear up and progress. However, it still feels like we are kind of pigeon-holed into a singular line of progression. Heroic Dungeons/Scenarios/TI>LFR>Flex>Normal>Heroic is the current status quo and it leaves little to no room to go back and explore. Once you leave a step behind, you probably won't be returning to it later.

With the introduction of Mythic Dungeons this all changes. Instead of moving down a straight path players will have an additional option to collect the gear they need to progress at end game. While it is just the first step and probably far from perfect, it is a step in the direction of opening up more ways for players to experience and gear up for end game content.

Small Group Content

Big groups are not for everyone. In fact, many players would prefer a smaller, more intimate group. This is probably one of the reasons raid groups have scaled back in numbers since the early days of the game. However, there are many players who are looking for even smaller groups. Whether it be because they can't fill a traditional raid, they don't like getting lost in a large group, or they feel like having a smaller group is a bigger challenge; some players just crave the embrace of a small party.

Currently, there is nothing really in game to cater to this desire, with 5-mans and Scenarios being pretty defunct after their initial completion. The introduction of Mythic Dungeons should help change that by offering up more challenging small group content with worthwhile rewards. Perhaps heralding in an era where small group content can stand side by side with other types of progression.

Patch Longevity

No matter how good a patch is, eventually it gets old. Content has been completed and players spend their time just waiting around for the next patch to hit. If the patch is especially lacking in content (Patch 6.1 I am looking at you!), players may even stop logging in or deactivate their accounts until new content is released. This is not an ideal situation at all.

Mythic Dungeons have the potential to help with the problem. With the introduction of Mythic Dungeons, players will have even more content to take on than ever before. This will hopefully inspire players to stick around longer and give patches the extended life that they sometimes need before a new patch is released.

One of the major problems Blizzard faces between patches is player boredom. After all content has been completed, players stop logging in and if they do it is only to complete their “chores”. Periods between patches and expansions are often slow and disheartening.

5-Man Rebirth

Let's face it; 5-mans have been pretty neglected in the last few expansions. In fact, in Mists of Pandaria one could easily forget they even existed at all. 5-mans have gone so far downhill that it left many wondering if they would totally vanish from the landscape of World of Warcraft, myself included.

While many didn't notice their decline, many others did. While 5-man dungeons may not have been the pinnacle of progression they added a special something to the game; often times helping to tell the story and offering a place for small groups of friends to converge and conquer. It seemed a shame that they had been all but forgotten. Now, with the introduction of Mythic Dungeons it seems that 5-mans will be finding their groove all over again and it is about time.

A Real Challenge

One of the biggest draws of Mythic Dungeons will be the challenge. Reportedly more difficult than challenge modes, these dungeons will not be easy, even for the most seasoned adventurer. To make things even more intense, the small group size will mean each and every player will need to pull their weight and even the smallest mistake could mean certain doom.

This idea is extremely appealing to the typical players who are only satisfied with the highest level of difficulty that can be thrown at them. However, due to the size of the group and the dungeon, this could open up this super challenging content to other players as well. With smaller time limits, Mythic Dungeons will be more accessible to those with time constraints, making this some truly challenging content that will be appealing to more players than ever.
