General Strategies

For a high level quest, this one is very short. Your party needs only
to defeat Baasthul and the few enemies that block the path to
Baasthul's lair. There are a handful of optional fights your party can
take on if you're feeling cocky, but it's hardly worth it.

There are four monsters your party must defeat before getting to
Baasthul: a troll chieftain, and ogre leader, and 2 huge rust monsters.
For the rust monsters, it is a good idea to have your heavy armor
wearers don a spare suit of armor. And all party members would do well
to equip a powerful but expendable weapon.

Baasthul is a flesh render, and a nasty one at that. The party will do
well to have a paladin with all his saves and armor and a href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=308">fighter
who can dish out reliable damage. A cleric is needed to keep the
tank alive, and the rest of the party can make this quest fly by by
used ranged damage. A ranger using Bow Strength is nice and vermin as a
Favored Enemy can have fun in this dungeon, as can a href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=77">sorcerer
who specializes in burst damage. The short duration of the quest
allows the sorcerer to unload spells on every monster encountered.

Section
1:
The hallway you enter curves left and has a side path to the
immediate left. Following that path will lead you into combat with 3
darkfang spiders. You can avoid the battle by continuing straight ahead
to the four-way intersection.

Section 2 (the 4-way):
Turning right at the 4-way leads to a dead end and an unnecessary
battle with 5 brown spider princes.

Going straight takes the party into two fights. The first is with 4
winter wolves. The second is with a glass spider queen and her 25 baby
glass spiders! The payoff for going this direction is access to a Rest
Shrine. Of course, exterminating all of those spiders will make the
Rest Shrine necessary, so the party should evaluate the risk and reward
for choosing this path. If you decide to take on the spiders, have the
casters in the party go crazy with href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=155">area
of effect spells.

Turning left at the 4-way goes to a safe path south int he library
until the hall curves back left. There you can either go right toward
your goal or circle back through the encounter with darkfang spiders
mentioned in Section 1.

style="font-weight: bold;">Section 3: Continue south through
the library until you encounter the two huge rust monsters in the curve
of the hall. Drag them back to a safe area to avoid bumping into
enemies around the corner. Blast the rust monsters with everything
you've got and continue around that corner.

You'll meet up with a troll chieftain and an ogre leader. Try Otto's
resistible dance on the ogre while the party assaults the troll first.
Think fire--lots of fire. Then lay into the ogre leader. The next fight
is with Baasthul, so you can use the Rest Shrine if you cleared the
path to it but saved it for later. If you haven't cleared the path to
the Rest Shrine, consider the struggle you go through to get to it and
plan accordingly.

Baasthul: You reach
Baasthul by continuing through the corner guarded by the troll and the
ogre and continuing straight down the hallway into a vast chamber.
Baasthul is fast, hits hard, and takes a while to drop. Try to let a
tank with high saves go in and get a good amount of hate established.
The start peppering the flesh render with arrows, bolts, and magic
while the cleric keeps the tank alive.

Killing Baasthul merely completes one chapter of the Eastern
Excavation. This was the easy part, and the next trip into the library
will be far more dangerous.
