Swashbuckling in Pirates of the
Burning Sea
involves building up initiative to unleash deadly
attacks while maintaining balance. Players enter combat with full
balance but no initiative. They then perform special moves to build
initiative faster. Moves that expend initiative tend to do high damage
but come at the cost of balance, too. As a player loses balance, he
becomes less accurate and less evasive. The result is a combat system
for thinking players rather than key spammers. The video below
demonstrates a swashbuckling encounter in style="font-style: italic;">Pirates of the Burning Sea.
