Microsoft helping to bring MMOs to consoles.

Microsoft is tired of waiting around for someone to really bring a MMO to its Xbox 360 console, so they are going to jump start the efforts. Announced today, Microsoft is partnering with Ankama group to bring Islands of Wakfu to Xbox Live Arcade late next year. Microsoft you've heard of, but if Ankama isn't ringing any bells, some of their game titles may. Ankama has created and released Dofus, and is currently in beta for Wakfu. Both free to play games have received significant international attention (Dofus is doing quite well apparently), but they have not captured the North Americans with the "subscription all you can eat" mentality. Using Xbox Live Arcade may be an excellent gateway to get MMOs out to the couches of America.

Islands of Wakfu promises to retain the look of Dofus and Wakfu, but will add the component of team play so two players can work together as they "reveal never seen before background content from the worlds of Dofus and Wakfu." This appears to be a good bridging mechanism between the old Halo Co-op mode and MMOs with raid parties. Watch for more information on our Free to Play Portal only on Ten Ton Hammer.
