We've been criticized for being too hard on Stargate Worlds, so I'll simply point out that Brad Wright, executive producer for most of all three Stargate TV series, seemed pretty down on SGW in this GateWorld interview. On the future of SGW, Wright says, "We don't know. It’s a shame. If it doesn’t happen — and, let’s be honest, it should be happening now if it was happening... It’s a terrible shame."

Wright, as a creative consultant and not directly plugged into game development, probably shouldn't be commenting on this matter before it's decided in one way or another. The most recent unsubstantiated rumors out of Phoenix are that CME recently got some funding, but there's no denying that they've bled a lot of talent since running into financial difficulties last November. We'll keep waiting for an official word.

Everyone that's been longing to meet up with Warhammer Online's older brother finally has a release date (or, more accurately, a release year which will probably change) to look forward to. Massively dove into THQ's financials to learn that the Warhammer 40k MMO is on the books for 2012. Now the only question that remains is how are we going to abbreviate this one since WAR's taken: W40?

A few days after CrimeCraft renounced the term MMORPG in favor of PWNS (Persistent World Next-gen Shooter), we did an in-depth interview with the folks at Vogster, covering just about every aspect of the game that they're currently talking about. At first I'll admit that the play on Warcraft seemed like the kind of creativity that comes out of Asia on a daily basis. But after reading through Dalmarus's interview, it seems like they have the right idea, combining the best aspects on online shooters - sort of the same assimilation approach Blizzard used toward MMOs with WoW. I was a little disappointed to learn that PvP would be limited to 3x3 and 8x8 instances, though their point of "bigger isn't always better" is well taken. Still a good old fashioned street riot ripped straight from Sublime lyrics might be fun, Rodney King day is coming up later this month, after all.

Another aspect that's missing from CrimeCraft is, well, police. Consulting with the devil on my shoulder, I've learned that part of the fun of GTA-style games isn't necessarily committing the crime, it's getting away with it after the inevitable chase. Which makes we wonder about vehicles, since we know the U3 engine is certainly capable.

Whatever your thoughts on CrimeCraft, you can see the kind of hurdles the next wave of MMO games face. You can see it in or lingering in the comments after every single interview, especially ones done by fans - gamers by-and-large want everything, up front, or they aren't interested. Unless I shout down my scope creep impulses and play the game the developers wanted to make (not the one I wanted them to make), I'm as guilty as anyone. There's so many games to enjoy that we're all looking for easy ways to filter out the noise. I'm all about forming a Scope Creepers Anonymous group (SCA... wait, that acronym is taken too) to start enjoying these games again.

Shayalyn's Epic Thread of the Day

From our /OOC (Off Topic) forum

Sham-pow! TSG

It's been kind of a heavy week, so I thought I'd lighten things up with a little Friday frivolity. Direct from our /OOC forum,
I bring you kitsunegirl's thread in which she reveals information on
Vince Shlomi (aka - the ShamWow guy) and his unfortunate drunken run-in
with a South Beach prostitute.

The fun doesn't end there,
though! This thread not only has the ShamWow guy, but a proposed Vince
Shlomi versus Billy Mays (aka - the Oxy Clean guy) death match, plus
Sylar, Spock, Rick James, and some very freaky girl-on-girl action.

C'mon, you know you can't resist.

Epic Quotes from the Epic Thread

"Wait a minute. How'd we get from Vince getting beat down by a hooker to
Shayalyn and Savanja rubbing warm oil all over each other
?"

- AngryBeaver

"Because no matter what you talk about it ALWAYS goes back to two women rubbing oil on each other!

Allllllllll right!
"

- Spare
