2010 has not been a kind year to Square Enix. After a less than stellar launch with Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix extended the free game time period by two additional months while they tried to correct issues within the game that had many players fuming or frustrated. When December arrived, Square Enix was still not satisfied with FFXIV's condition, so they replaced the leadership team on the project.

The news got a bit worse today when Square Enix made a rather steep revision to its fiscal year forecast. The developer cited poor sales performance for console games released during the fiscal year and harsh market feedback for one game in particular. I would let you guess, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the game in question is FFXIV. The revisions included a more than 90% cut to the company's net profit forecast.

What does this mean for FFXIV? In the short term probably nothing. But Square Enix certainly hopes that the game will shape up under its new leadership and meet player expectations. I'm sure they would also like to start charging a subscription sometime soon as well. Could this revision affect FFXIV? Tell us what you think on our forums.
