THQ and Relic Pull the Plug on Company of Heroes Online
After an extensive open beta test, Company of Heroes Online (COHO) will effectively end its open beta phase on March 31st, 2011. The announcement was made on the COHO website, much to the shock of many players. The announcement left more questions than answers about the future of COHO and fans of the game were not exactly thrilled at the news, especially given that a post last year indicated that there would be no more wipes between the game's open beta and its official launch.
COHO ceases testing March 31st, future uncertain.
But today we can confirm that COHO will officially end on March 31st according to a post from Relic Entertainment's Associate Online Community Specialist Jeffrey Simpson. In response to a question from one of the community, the Relic Entertainment representative offered a short and to the point answer.
Q: So the project is dropped?
A: Yes as of March 31st CoHO is closing, the servers will be turned off and the game will end.
The COHO forums are not a happy place to be right now. Cries of being duped and cheated are being tossed around in the announcement thread as many players bought COHO Cash and worked to advance in-game only to learn that it was all coming to an end before it even began. This was not helped by the Beta Closure FAQ stating that there would be no refunds for COHO Cash.
Will players receive refunds for their COHO Cash?
In order to give players ample time to spend their COHO Cash balances, we will allow players to purchase in-game items through 11:59PM on March 31, 2011. COHO Cash balances will not be refunded. Please review our refund policy HERE.
The announcement did reveal a special offer for beta testers that registered on the COHO website before February 1st, 2011. If you registered before that time, you can claim a code to purchase the Company of Heroes Gold Edition for just $4.99. The Gold Edition of the game includes 17 additional single player missions and 2 additional multiplayer armies in the form of the British and Panzer Elite.
In the meantime, players can no longer purchase COHO Cash from the game's website, but any previously bought currency or COHO Cash Cards can still be used in the game through March 31st, 2011.
Check out the official announcement on the official COHO website.
Note: At the time of this writing, there is an issue with code redemption in areas outside of Canada, Guam (USA), Mexico, Puerto Rico, United States, and Virgin Islands (USA). The team is working to resolve this issue and the codes for the Gold Edition discount should be available worldwide once resolved.
