Travels Through Telara

By Padraic

Greetings once again, dear readers. Today Bran is moping about, staring
into the distance and sighing a lot. I assume he is still thinking
about Shlya Starhearth, as he has been in the same mood ever since he
saw her. But I'm afraid I have more important things to do than listen
to the bad poetry of a young man in the throes of unrequited love. I
have important news to take to the Guardians. But for you to understand
its import, I must relate a bit of the history of Silverwood and the
High Elves first.

After the gods made the world and its many peoples, Tavril the nature
goddess, called the Elves together in Silverwood. Tavril wanted someone
to guard the wild places of the world, the forests, the mountains, the
hidden valleys, and she chose the Elves for this task. At a holy
location deep inside Silverwood called the Mirror of Ages, the High
Elves met with the goddess and accepted this Covenant, from that point
on becoming Tavril's favored race. Throughout the centuries, the Elves
have remained true to their task, traveling far and wide across the
world so they can better carry out their holy duty.

style="font-style: italic;">Silverwood

But it is Silverwood that is their spiritual home, the one place they
will strive to protect with everything they have. That is not to say
Silverwood is untouched by the planar invasions. One only has to
venture close to Sunken Marsh, an area that was once a thriving
wildlife refuge, to see that even here, the rifts sometimes triumph.
Beasts from the Plane of Life scoured the area, destroying its natural
ecosystem and making it their own. None venture too close for fear
of  what they might disturb.

The Mathosians and the High Elves have always lived peacefully
together. (Except for the technocratic Eth. They are a different story
entirely and the Elves want absolutely nothing to do with them.) The
Elves even allowed the Mathosians to build their city, Port Scion, just
outside Silverwood. Sadly, this city is now a smoldering ruin thanks to
the Guardian traitor, Alsbeth the Discordant. Alsbeth destroyed the
magical barrier around the city and opened up a death rift, allowing
the forces of Regulos to overwhelm the city. I shudder to think what is
taking place behind those once-mighty walls. At night, you can hear the
screams and gibberings of the creatures that roam those once hallowed
streets.

The High Elves also allowed the humans to build Quicksilver College
inside the boundaries of their land. The college is a symbol of the
Guardian alliance. Mathosian, Elves, and Dwarves all enroll in in
Quicksilver College to learn the magical arts, and the college is now
the greatest school of magic in Telara. It is said that the research
that goes on behind its doors could very well be what ultimately that
saves us from these abominable rifts.

Oh. Bran is no longer moping. He is now swinging a stick around,
decapitating flowers and muttering about "that stupid Prince Hylas".
Good. That means he has entered angry phase of unrequited love. Next
will come depression, and after that he should be back to normal.
That's assuming he doesn't run into Shyla again.

style="font-style: italic;">Prince Hylas

Speaking of Prince Hylas brings me to the important news I was talking
about earlier. It turns out that there is still more to tell of the
prince's story. Although House Aelfwar has still been fighting the
Wanton in an attempt to protect Silverwood, for some reason they do not
challenge the creatures of Sunken Marsh or the Fae of Hedgerow Court.
It is even said that Hylas has banned iron weapons, and as everyone
knows, iron weapons are fatal to Faeries of all types. It was these
facts that rang the biggest alarm bells in my head and prompted me to
do a little investigation on my own.

It was while I was going through some of the empty Elf villages,
abandoned when Prince Hylas took House Aelfwar to Overwatch Keep, that
I found a wooden chest with the following letter inside.

style="font-style: italic;">My dear Prince Hylas,

style="font-style: italic;">Though you have called me enemy,
the birds and beasts tell me of your woes. As a fellow guardian of the
wild, my heart goes out to you. I too know the sting of a loved one's
betrayal. Your Priestess Shyla has always been too eager to spend her
time with the Mathosians. Now she has returned from the dead and
claimed this was the work of your gods, and yet… there is but one force
I know that can animate the dead, and his name is Regulos.

We need not be enemies,
O Prince. We share a common love of nature and the pristine wild, and a
common loathing of the Guardians, who manage to blend the stink of
death with the pomposity of religion. You remind me very much of the
magnificent Fae— such as myself— who hail from the deepest parts of the
Plane of Life. Even now, I have access to power that would save your
beautiful Silverwood with ease. You need only ask.

A
kindred spirit,
style="font-style: italic;">Twyl
style="font-style: italic;">
Lord of the Fae

style="font-style: italic;">Overwatch Keep

This is my terrible news. I think the Prince has acquiesced to Lord
Twyl and has formed some sort of alliance with the Fae. I will of
course, be taking this letter to Shyla and the Guardians immediately.
Who knows what Hylas plans. He is a misguided soul, led astray by his
insecurities and jealousies. I only hope he does not destroy Silverwood
in his blindness.

I will of course, be leaving Bran here. I'm worried that is he sees
Shyla again so soon he might throw himself at her feet and declare his
undying love for her.

That would be terribly embarrassing.
