Water Rifts originate from the elemental Plane of Water, which is home to the dragon Akylios. He is one of the six ancient Dragon Gods known as the Blood Storm and leads the dragon cult of the Abyssal. While the other great Dragon Gods have plans, aims, and desires, Akylios does not. When he and his fellow gods raged the universe, he learned every spell, secret, dream and nightmare there was. As a result he is now quite simply insane beyond all comprehension. He has no real goals at all, other than to hear the universe scream in a symphony of agony and madness for his amusement.

Rifts that open from the Plane of Water spread the out and flow over the landscape in a tidal flood. The land and sky sprout all manner of madness as strange sea creatures and plants wash into Telara. Writhing tentacles hang from the sky and sprout from the ground trying to drag anything they can to their gaping maws lined with endless rows of teeth. Everything around the Rift slows and quiets down as the air takes on an almost water like consistency and glows a pale blue.

Water Rift Locations

Water Rifts can be found in several of the zones in Telara. While not as wide spread as some of the other types of Rifts, they are an important type of Rift in the game. You can find them first in the zone of Freemarch if you are a Defiant player. If you are not a Defiant player, then you will not see Water Rifts until much later in the game. In fact you will not find any until the zones of Moonshade Highlands and then again in Iron Pine Peak.

Creatures

Water Elementals

There are great swarms of different types of creatures that come from or worship the Plane of Water and Akylios. No matter their appearance, they all have one thing firmly in common, they are beset by the whispering nightmares and madness of their patron god Akylios.

The minions of the Plane of Water are most often seen as fish-based humanoids that have powerful magics at their disposal. They are often found along side demented humans that also serve Akylios. Another common site near Water Rifts are elementals made of the very element that gives the plane from which they come it’s name.

In addition to all of the minions that seem to fit with the elemental plane of Water there can be found some that don’t. For example one of the planes great champions is a giant werewolf named Farous that serves as a Zone invasion boss in Iron Pine Peaks. It seems that the insanity of the Water Plane knows no limits in who or what it can corrupt.

Usable Spawned Objects

When fighting near Water Rift you can find items that can be used to assist you. While these can vary between different rifts, the most common to spawn from Water Rifts are the crystals that spawn from most rifts that provide useful bonuses.

The crystals that spawn can be moved close to and clicked on to grant different buffs depending on their color. There are red, green, and blue crystals that can be activated. Red grant extra attack power and spell power, while green grants a health HOT (Heal Over Time) effect, and blue grants a mana / energy regeneration effect. These bonuses are extremely useful when there are few players around the Rift to help in closing it. Make sure you watch for them and grab them when you can.

Notoriety

While defeating Water Rifts you will earn notoriety with either the Order of Purity if you are a Guardian or with the Mercurial Savants if you are a Defiant player. Meena is the quartermaster for the Order of Purity and can be round in Sanctum, while Lisra Zaro is the quartermaster for the Mercurial Savants and can be found in Meridian.

Physical DPS players should focus on this faction and start earning notoriety early with them for once they reach level 50. This faction has a level 50 planar essences for sale once you are decorated with them that grants +Hit which is a key physical DPS stat.
