At the end of Return of the Jedi, the Rebellion ultimately conquered the Empire and saved the galaxy from the tyrannical grasp of Emperor Palpatine, but that is not necessarily the case for the ending of Star Wars Galaxies. With the game set to officially cease operation on December 15th, Sony Online Entertainment has put the final outcome of the Galactic Civil War in the hands of the players.

Starting in September, players will fight to earn Galactic Civil War Points for their side. New events and contests will be added that can help earn points for each faction. Sometime before the game's closing on December 15th, all of the points will be tallied for each server and the faction with the most points will win the war. Whoever wins will change the way that the game will end for that server. To the victor go the spoils and to the losers, well, the official post explains it eloquently, "Celebrations will be in order for those who win and, for the losers, let's just say they'll be going out with a bang."

Neutral players will find new decorations in the Storyteller system that will aid in the hosting of your own shutdown events if you decide not to take part in the war.

Players that would like to take part in the final months of Star Wars Galaxies will need to purchase an additional 30 days of game time before September 15th if their current cycle doesn't run beyond that date. Anyone that has an account that extends beyond the September 15th deadline will be able to play without paying again until the doors officially close on December 15th.
