Mark your calendars. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, one of Sony Online Entertainment’s (SOE) final subscription game holdouts is going free-to-play on August 14th, 2012. SOE revealed details about Vanguard's new payment model last month and have now announced the official transition date along with more changes coming with the move, including a spiffy new website.

Some of the changes that will be coming with Vanguard’s free-to-play launch include a starting area revamp that will let players begin their adventure in Cliffs of Ghelgad, Tanvu, Three Rivers Village, Tursh Village, or the Isle of Dawn, the removal of race-based class restrictions and the implementation of the new Vanguard Marketplace.

In addition, SOE is advising Vanguard players to claim any unclaimed reward items before August 7th. After that date, they will no longer be available.

Update: Since this initial story ran, SOE soft launched the free-to-play version of Vanguard a little early along with a hefty new update loaded with zone and quest revamps, class changes and more. Visit the new Vanguard website to download the client and sign up to play.
