Prepared for Mists of Pandaria?

Paragon Studios and City of Heroes Shutting Down

Posted Mon, Sep 03, 2012 by Martuk

All good superhero stories usually tend to have a happy ending, unfortunately, this won’t be the case for City of Heroes. Paragon Studios recently announced that as part of a restructuring plan at NCsoft, Paragon Studios will be shutting down and City of Heroes will be shutting down before the end of the year. Community Manager Andy Belford posted a heart-felt goodbye message explaining the news which came as a shock to much of the community.

As always our best wishes go out to the developers at Paragon Studios that may be affected by this move.

This morning we announced that Paragon Studios will be taking to the skies of City of Heroes for the last time.

In a realignment of company focus and publishing support, NCsoft has made the decision to close Paragon Studios. Effective immediately, all development on City of Heroes will cease and we will begin preparations to sunset the world's first, and best, Super Hero MMORPG before the end of the year. As part of this, all recurring subscription billing and Paragon Market purchasing will be discontinued effective immediately. We will have more information regarding a detailed timeline for the cessation of services and what you can expect in game in the coming weeks.

The team here at Paragon deserves special praise for all that we have accomplished over the last 5+ years. These developers are some of the most creative and talented people in the gaming industry. By now, we've all been given this news internally, but to anyone who may be reading this message after the fact; know that your hard work and dedication has not gone unappreciated or unnoticed. To any potential studios looking to grow your team; hire these people. You won't regret it.

To our Community,

Thank you. Thank you for your years of support. You've been with us every step of the way, sharing in our challenges, encouraging us to make City of Heroes better, more than everyone else thought it could be. We couldn't have come this far without you. I implore you all, focus on the good things of CoH and Paragon Studios. Don't dwell on the "how" or the "why", but rather join us in celebrating the legacy of an amazing partnership between the players and the development team.

Thank you, and I'll see you in the skies, one last time.

Paragon Studios.

"n a realignment of company focus and publishing support" = Throw all our support behind the proven earner, Guild Wars 2.

Astonishing as it is, most of the City of Heroes community has boycott the GW2 project. Meanwhile, others that have already invested in the GW2 pre-order are adamant that it is in fact an AlertNet item (not truly NCSoft.) Guild Wars has been a flagship of NCSoft for quite some time, know this before hanging your hat there.

This was a very sad day for the City of Heroes community. As a community we have decided to do what we can to see if we could save the game. We have a petition out there with 11,284 signatures as of 2 hours ago. This is more then a game to this community, we have become a family. Because it was a smaller player base then some MMO's we were able to do that. I think we were all happy with the size of our player base, we were able to be more personal with each other. We became a family. Even though a small base, the game still netted profits and not losses.

Those numbers are truly an achievement... Much like the awestruck Richard Garriott - Tabula Rasa of yesteryear. It is unknown whether his nestegg rested from NCSoft fueled the upcoming Ultima Online genesis. Seeing how NCSoft is a Fortune 500 equivalent in euro-asia terms, a couple 20mil lawsuits shouldnt hurt too much. Those of you that could care less of TR, he was also on the producing staff of CoH and CoV. So as an afterthought, plan ahead and ponder where your supergroup is going to get to work next... Millennium City or Metropolis, the choices are slim as we know?
