Pure subscription games are on the decline, and Trion Worlds’ upcoming multiplayer shooter, Defiance, is unlikely to travel that pure subscription road. Nathan Richardsson, Trion’s new VP of Development and Executive Producer for Defiance, recently spoke with GamesIndustry International about his new role, the stigma surrounding the MMO label and confirmed that the online shooter will use a hybrid business model.

“We'll be providing a number of choices for the customers so you choose if and how you pay for things. Exactly in what manner remains to be seen as we're still changing some factors and responding to feedback. It's going to be a hybrid business model though, that much is certain.”

While Richardsson did not go into any additional details than that, it’s probably safe to speculate that the model will likely include a free play version of some sort as well as microtransactions and a subscription option given that many hybrid models such as those used by The Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan and many others make use of that.
