Trion's Nathan Richardsson Confirms Hybrid Business Model for Defiance

Pure subscription games are on the decline, and Trion Worlds’ upcoming multiplayer shooter, Defiance, is unlikely to travel that pure subscription road. Nathan Richardsson, Trion’s new VP of Development and Executive Producer for Defiance, recently spoke with GamesIndustry International about his new role, the stigma surrounding the MMO label and confirmed that the online shooter will use a hybrid business model.

We'll be providing a number of choices for the customers so you choose if and how you pay for things. Exactly in what manner remains to be seen as we're still changing some factors and responding to feedback. It's going to be a hybrid business model though, that much is certain.”

While Richardsson did not go into any additional details than that, it’s probably safe to speculate that the model will likely include a free play version of some sort as well as microtransactions and a subscription option given that many hybrid models such as those used by The Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan and many others make use of that.

This is a serious issue and this needs to resolved as fast as possible. Before adopting a business model it would be better to go for a review of the model to find out its effectiveness. My friend in Australia surveyed the business model as well as the company structure in Australia before launching her venture.

Yeah, I was about to shop for custom packing tape at when I heard about this and honestly, I don't know if it's such a good idea to let us choose what we're going to buy, because either way, it's going to be chaos. You're either the maniac who buys everything he sees on EBay, either the Scotchman who keeps his money in the socket.

Oh wow, I am a big fan of Defiance, the TV series, but I had absolutely no clue it is made after a game! If the MMO is as good as what I saw, I am definitely playing it. Rockne S. O’Bannon must have used or something for his businesses, one can't simply create Defiance, Warehouse 13 and especially Farscape without a bit of help!
