CCP has detailed the first line of changes for hacking and archaeology in the upcoming EVE Online: Odyssey expansion in a new dev blog this week. The new hacking system removes the "sit and wait" approach of old in favor of a more hands-on system minigame inspired by exploration based dungeon crawlers of the roguelike variety, featuring procedurally generated levels, turn-based combat, and permadeath on a scale suited to shorter games.
With the new feature, players will penetrate a module in the new minigame and explore its network to seek out and destroy its cores to gain control of the system. Along the way, players may also encounter defensive subsystems that will try to stop them, encrypted datacaches that may help or hinder their progress, and utility subsystems that can be used to aid in battling the system. If a player manages to succeed in destroying the cores, they gain control of the system. Failing will result in the module losing coherence and possibly even self-destructing and taking all of its contents with it.
