SOE Reveals More About ProSiebenSat.1 EU Partnership

Updated Thu, Feb 23, 2012 by Martuk

Not everyone is happy with a new deal between Sony Online Entertainment and ProSiebenSat.1, which turns over publishing responsibilities to ProSiebenSat.1 for 8 of SOE’s titles in 40 countries that include DC Universe Online, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, PoxNora, Magic: The Gathering - Tactics, EverQuest II, Free Realms, PlanetSide 2 and EverQuest Next.

The new deal will unfortunately segregate the NA and EU communities. EU players will not have access to NA servers with the exception of EverQuest II EU players already playing on them. This doesn’t appear to work the other way around for NA players though.

Under the new partnership between SOE and ProSiebenSat.1 Games, European players of the above mentioned SOE games will be able to play via ProSiebenSat.1 Games's service and will not have access to U.S. servers.  However, existing EverQuest II players in Europe that have played on U.S. servers before the transition will be allowed to continue playing on those servers through their SOE accounts.

European players will also be required to create a new ProSiebenSat.1 account to migrate their characters to. The upside is that the new deal will provide more localized support for the titles in question. Additional details are available in a new FAQ and more will be revealed at a later time.

You can read the official thread on the topic here. If the thread is any indication, there's quite a few unhappy about the move.

There's also an interesting story EQ2 Wire has put together that points out a few things that the deal may have overlooked. And some very good points. Check out the full story.

Thanks to wytchnocturnus for the tip.

Update: SOE Responds to Player Feedback Over ProSiebenSat.1 Announcement

That's putting it mildly. All hell's breaking loose in the EQ2 community, or at least in the subsection seen on the forums. Posts are being modded left and right, or even outright 'disappeared' with no notice at all. Feldon of EQ2Wire got himself a 3 day ban, partly due to posting a cartoon by Cheese Pirate that rather aptly puts what this deal is doing.

Anybody who's done the slightest bit of research into this outfit knows what a shoddy crew it is. I'm simply stunned that SOE is handing over keys to the European branch of the franchise to alaplaya.

This may be the beginning of the end of SOE as a major online player. Stay tuned...

This is disgusting - I tuly hope people do what I have done and simply cancel accounts, and refuse to touch $OE products ever again.

Whoa come'on... A few unhappy ? I have seen only 2-3 post just dubious about this and maybe 1 positive (probably a PSS1 web manager :p )
