One thing ArenaNet is aiming for with their dungeons in Guild Wars 2 is to give them meaning and detailed back-story by not only crafting a fun experience to play, but by utilizing detailed cinematics to help tell the story.

These cinematics play at the key moments of the story mode in each of the eight dungeons in Guild Wars 2, setting the mood and delivering valuable info. Stylistically, we’re pushing the concept of a visual storybook as a form of communicating to the player – we want the cinematics to feel like moving paintings.

In the latest developer blog, Cinematic Department Lead Horia Dociu takes us into one of the more iconic areas of Guild Wars 2, the Ascalonian Catacombs. Included in the blog is a new cinematic video that tells the tale of Ascalon’s past and how King Adelbern used his cursed sword to curse the entire kingdom as it fell to its Charr invaders.
