How many classes are there to choose from?

Tabula Rasa will have 15 classes at launch. You can see the list and how each is reached here.

You don't select a class at character creation? I don't understand.

This game is unique in you don't pick your class immediately at character creation. You start out as a Recruit until you are level 5 then choose between the battle hungry Soldier or the supportive Specialist. You will make another class choice again at level 15 and your final one at level 30.

Can you undo your choices and switch classes?

The answer to this is a resounding...sort of. Tabula Rasa provides a very unusual mechanic called cloning. Throughout the game you have the ability to earn clone tokens allowing you to make an exact replica of your character (minus your gear) to play. This means if you clone your character right before your level 15 class choice it's possible to go back and start right back where you left off if you made a mistake.

What is the difference between the Soldier sub-classes and the Support sub-classes?

While this may seem like it could be answered with a simple "Doy" the Soldier and Specialist sub-classes aren't as cut and dried as they may see. You might think someone travelling down the Medical tree wouldn't be able to do much in the way of damage. To best understand the difference you need to look at the Tier 3 choices.

Commando vs Ranger - The Commando will go on to classes like the Greandier who provide amazing amounts of damage and take considerable amounts of punishment in order to win. The Ranger works in a similar way but with the idea of stealth and subtelty in mind. Masters of surprise and in the Spy's case disguise the use tactics and finesse to accomplish their missions

Sapper vs Exobiologist - These two classes may be easy to underestimate but are in no way any less useful than a Soldier. With the ability to directly damage health, the Exobiologist is a class to be feared. Not to overshadowed, the Sapper classes are pretty much the Q (think James Bond) of the AFS. With the ability to cause explosions and build machinery to help them, they are an addition to any squad.

I've heard crafting was in the game, does this mean it is a profession?

Crafting has been recently added to Tabula Rasa allowing players to modify weapons and armor while also creating their own medicine and ammunition. Unfortunatley crafting does not appear to have enough depth to sustain it as a career but it makes a great secondary game for those who enjoy it and allows such things as armor dyes to be created.

What is the best class to (insert playstyle)? It's really up to the player. Even classes like Medics if armed and prepared can take down an amazing number of enemies. Remember to examine the Logos abilities to see what each one can do.
