Quotes from the Field: A Special Report from the Tabula Rasa Devs

Posted November 2nd, 2007 by Cody Bye

In the jam-packed arena people call the MMOG marketplace, there‘s rarely a time when a developer can come out and simply say that players should buy their game. They may list all the pros and cons, but it’s not often that someone gives them the opportunity to speak their mind on the product they’ve created. But Ten Ton Hammer, being a benevolent network, has granted that wish to the Tabula Rasa development team.

Recently they sent us a selection of quotes from members of the Tabula Rasa team that were asked to finish the following sentence: “I think everyone should play Tabula Rasa because…”

Here are their responses:

Richard Garriott, Executive Producer: “I am very proud of what the team has made with TR, and I am excited about my specific areas of contribution like the Logos language. Interestingly, while TR is definitely not an Ultima, I am sure players will see the "Lord British" impact on the game. The combat system combined with dynamic battlefields is the area I feel will compel players the most, and that is not only a really cool feature but new ground we’ve broken, compared with other games I’ve made. Most importantly, not only do I believe TR is a great game, but there is no doubt in my mind players will find it's unique features a breath of fresh air in a sea of MMO sameness. If players give it a chance, I am sure they will enjoy it!”

Starr Long, Producer:
“I think everyone should play Tabula Rasa because our blend of action and RPG is a total blast to play. I also think everyone needs to experience taking or defending a control point in TR. It really does feel like war!”

April Burba, Community Manager: “I think everyone should play Tabula Rasa because what could possibly be bad about turret-exploding, rapid-firing, backstabbing, alien-stomping action?”

Robert Garriott, CEO: “I think everyone should play Tabula Rasa because it is my favorite MMO and I am not a hardcore gamer. The only Ultima I ever played was Ultima 3, and other than City of Heroes and Dungeon Runners, I haven't really played very many MMORPGs. There is something special about Tabula Rasa. I actually had one of the highest level characters in beta (I didn't cheat like Richard did) and still play a ton. Anyone can pick it up and have fun saving humanity from the Aliens, kicking butt, and taking names.”

Patrick Ryan, QA Tester: “I think everyone should play Tabula Rasa because it is the only MMO that possesses the visceral feel of a first or third person shooter.  This is a REAL GAME, in REAL TIME, not some turn-based snooze-fest housed in a glorified chat system.”

Susan Kath, Design Lead:  “I think everyone should play Tabula Rasa because when the alien hordes show up to take over Earth, you’ll totally be ready to kick their ass!”

Rusty Koonce, Client Technology Lead: "The words ogre and mage don't appear anywhere in the game and full scene real-time lighting with volumetric shadows is cool.” *smiles*

Casey Walker Thorp, Senior Internal QA Tester: “I think everyone should play Tabula Rasa because no other MMO offers the satisfying and visceral feeling of cutting down your enemies in a swath of bullets, running up to them to kick off their heads, and then driving their remaining forces out of an encampment all in just a few minutes.”

Albert Kanan, Product Marketing Manager: “I think everyone should play Tabula Rasa because it’s a really fun game!”

Joel White, Designer: “The sci-fi setting and big guns give this game an edge no other one has.

Andy Bruncke, Associate Producer: “Because… the game is really fun.  I know that sounds odd, all games should be fun, but after working on something for so long, it is easy to only look at the things you wish you would have or could have done and not see the game for what it is, but as a long-time game player, it is just a really fun, action-packed game.

Todd Bailey, Designer: “…we need the practice for when the real alien invasion arrives.”
