I had to respond to BoomJack's Loading… this morning. Just the thought of someone questioning something that I believe in so wholly made me start twitching like a crack addict on a ten day detox. How can the DC Universe be made into a successful MMORPG? Let me tell you.

First off, the key word in that question is Universe. Unlike City of Heroes (I have nothing but love so please forgive the following comments.) it's not limited to one city. You have an entire universe that the DC heroes protect. There is an unlimited amount of content that can be gleaned from this source.

One of the smartest decisions that WB made was to create Justice League Unlimited. It opened up the genre to not only the common non-comic book reading person, but it also introduces us to a new cast of characters that not everyone would know about. Instead of the traditional Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash scenario, you are now looking at hundreds of possible characters to play with.

Now, it's unlikely that the MMO will let you play the main characters from the Universe, simply because everyone is going to want to be Batman and you can't have 100,000 of them running around. It creates a lack of variety. However, why not start players out as sidekicks? Would I want to be Batman's sidekick? You bet your bippy I would. Players could focus on leveling them up to be a full blown hero.

It's been mentioned that some of the comics will follow the game. Therefore it would be in a player's best interest to create their own unique character that could possibly be featured in a future issue of the JLA. I can see myself joining the Lanterns and defending troubled planets. The Green Lantern home world Oa becomes a new playing field.

City of Heroes had a few pitfalls. One was the issue of licensing. Everyone wanted to make the Hulk or Captain Marvel. It obviously created problems. Also, the reward system made the game go stale after about a month of play. They could have made up a Universe of their own but they didn't have the resources that Sony will have for their DC product. You have upwards of seventy years of rich history to work with on this project.

Would I like being a Green Arrow or a Black Canary? Sure I would. However, like any MMO, I want to create a character that is my own. It's enough for me to play in a world where these characters exist. I think that you will be surprised with what they are able to accomplish on this one. Am I worried that they won't do it right? I'm shaking in my pajama bottoms. However, saying that there isn't anywhere to go with this one is grossly untrue.
