Getting Started |
In order to carry around all your hard-earned loot, you'll need bags. And it won't be long before that 16-slot pack you begin the game with starts to burst at the seams.
Two introductory notes:
1) Unless you're seriously strapped, don't buy bags from an NPC vendor; they're overpriced in an effort to drive business towards the tailors.
2) Humanoid mobs often drop linen cloth; save it! Even if you don't choose tailoring as a profession, you might wish to try out First Aid as a secondary profession. And if you're not into First Aid, you can sell off the linen (which stacks 20 tall) for a nice profit at the Auction House later on.
At no time during the game will you feel the need for a bag moreso than in the first 10 levels, especially if you don't get some high-level help with coin or bags. If you lack a sugar daddy (or mommy), no worries; just remember to sell off unneeded items every time you're near a vendor and you'll be fine. Really, all bags do is extend your time in the field and, until you leave the "newbie garden," this really shouldn't be an issue.
You start with a 16-slot bag, and if by level 7 you haven't looted two more 6-slot bags, I'd be very surprised. Crank out those quests, kill mobs while in transit, and before long you'll have some serious transit space. As you finish out the series of quests in the newbie zone, you'll likely be asked to travel into a mine or cavern of some sort. This area represents the first true challenge to your container space, so be sure to empty out your bags before you dive in.
Other Dropped Bags |
The list of 10+ slot dropped bags is far too long for this guide, suffice it to say that good bags typically come from named mobs (rares / elites) and random mobs and bosses in various instances.
Tailored Bags |
Tailoring is a great money-making profession, especially if you're playing a class limited to cloth armor (or "wet paper bag" armor, as it's sometimes called). Contrary to popular belief, you need not forego First Aid as a tailor (or buy cloth for ridiculous prices at the Auction House). But in order to comfortably craft First Aid bandages, you might need to "outgrow" a certain type of cloth in tailoring before you can begin using this cloth in First Aid. For example, at Tailoring 100 or so, you'll need wool rather than linen cloth to raise your skill. So as linen continues to drop from mobs, use it to level your First Aid skill, if you wish. For more details on these professions, check out our First Aid and Tailoring guides.
And one of tailoring's biggest draws is the ability to make bags. If you begin tailoring at level 10 (and you've been saving up your linen from humanoid mobs), you should have around 2 and a half stacks of linen to work with. Craft all your linen bolts, then buy some coarse thread. Produce linen belts until you hit Tailoring (45), then buy the recipe for linen bagse. These six slot bags are adequate for your teens, so craft as many as you need (they also sell back to NPC vendors for a nice 2 silver, or auction them for a little more). Hopefully these hints will get you started in tailoring.
Here are the other tailored bags (excluding soul bags and tradeskill bags which we'll look at later) and the skill necessary to craft them. Click the bag to research it using TenTonHammer Search.

Bag Quests |
While tailoring is one of the best ways to get decent bags, questing is one of the worst. By the time you get these quest rewards, you'll probably have come across a better bag by other means.Nevertheless, you may want to complete these quests for the experience or faction benefit (or to replace non-soulbound bags of similar size, which you can sell off).
Quests offering bags as a possible reward are listed below, categorized by Horde, Alliance, and Neutral quest-givers. Click the item or the quest name to research the terms using TenTonHammer Search.
The easiest way to get an extra bag eary in the game is to play a Dranei or Blood Elf as they both receive quests early on (level 4ish) for free 4 slot bag.
Neutral Quests
Bag | Slots | Quest Name / Level |
Deviate Hide Pack | 10 slot | Deviate Hides (17) |

Ooze-Covered Bag | 10 slot | Digging Through the Ooze (24) |
Gunnysack of the Night Watch | 10 slot | The Night Watch (30) |
Quivers, Shot Pouches, and Bandoliers |
Quivers (bows and crossbows), shot pouches (guns), and bandoliers (thrown weapons) not only provide a place to store massive amounts of ammo for your chosen ranged weapon skill, but also increase your attack speed with that particular ranged weapon. Remember to upgrade these pouches from time to time (you can use medium sized ones at level 30, for example), they're fairly cheap for the benefits they confer.
Soul Bags |
So-called "Soul Bags" are a Warlock-only item, used to store their unstackable soul shards (used as a reagent in many of their key spells, such as demon summoning and soul stone creation). They're sort of a Warlock quiver, however a Warlock may only have one soul bag equipped. Note that Soul Bags may only hold soul shards (and not any other kind of item).
These are high level bags, and the components and recipes are found in hard-to-get-to corners of some very tough instances. Click the item to research the item using TenTonHammer Search.
Bag | Slots | Level | Tailoring Skill |
Soul Pouch | 20 slot | 52 | 260 |
Felcloth Bag | 24 slot | 57 | 280 |
Core Felcloth Bag | 28 slot | 60 | 300 |
Ebon Shadowbag | 28 slot | 375 |
Tradeskill Bags |
Trade skill bags are bags that allow gather type professions to hold more items in a bag as long as they are limited to only items of that profession. If you are willing to give up the use of one whole bag slot for your profession then a trade skill bag is probably your best way to go since they are much larger than other bags out there.
