World of Warcraft Leatherworking Guide
Leatherworking is one of several primary trade skills found in the game World of Warcraft. Players may choose up to two primary trade skills for their character at any given time. Choosing Leatherworking as one of your primary professions will allow you to create a variety of items, including leather and mail armors, cloaks, and armor kits. To create these items the player will use the various leathers found throughout the world and gathered with the Skinning profession.
Before you can get anywhere in any profession you must first learn it. To do this you must seek out a Leatherworking Trainer. Leatherworking Trainers can be found in all capital cities and starting zones. Characters need to be at least level 5 to initially learn this (or any other) profession.
Upon training you will be granted the Apprentice rank and have a potential skill of 75 as well as a few new patterns under your belt. More patterns can be found as world drops, purchased from NPCs, or become available as the Leatherworker raises their skill level. Visit your Leatherworking Trainer often so you don’t miss out on any new patterns or skill increases!

Getting started with the Leatherworking profession is quite simple. All the Leatherworker needs is the correct materials to craft a certain pattern and they can set straight to work. This is vastly different from other professions that may require the player to be in a special location or have various pieces of equipment to get the job done. Leatherworkers can practice their craft anytime and anywhere in the wide World of Warcraft. *
Leatherworking is a crafting based profession and so crafting items is how you will ultimately earn skill points for this profession. The patterns you will be crafting can be found in your profession journal. You will notice that the patterns found here come in a variety of colors that will help you determine how likely that pattern is to earn you a skill point:
|Red||Unable to craft this item at this time|
|Orange||A skill point will always be gained by crafting this item (unless you are at maximum skill level).|
|Yellow||You will most likely gain a skill point by making this item, but may not.|
|Green||You will probably not gain a skill point for crafting this item, but still may.|
|Gray||You will never earn a skill point for crafting this item.|
As you increase your skill in the Leatherworking profession you will notice that patterns move from orange down the spectrum all the way to gray. In order to keep a steady flow of skill obtaining patterns for you to craft you must seek out new patterns. Thankfully, your trainer will provide most of these with new patterns becoming available with every 5-10 patterns you earn. Patterns can also be found as world drops and purchased from various NPCs around the world as well as the Auction House.
*There is one exception to this rule. In order for a Leatherworker to create [Refined Deeprock Salt] for curing [Rugged Hide], you will need to have an Engineering-made [Salt Shaker]. This item requires a skill level of 250 Leatherworking to use.*
While some professions leave you guessing when it comes to which secondary profession compliments it, Leatherworking is pretty straight forward. Leatherworking depends almost totally upon the materials (leather) gathered by skinning beasts and other critters throughout the world, thereby making Skinning the best profession to pair with it.
While you can level Leatherworking without Skinning, via the Auction House, this is a difficult and costly process that will most likely leave the player frustrated and broke. Even if you cannot learn Skinning on your main character, it is a good idea to pick it up on an alternate character to farm the materials you will need for your Leatherworker.
Besides creating magnificent pieces of armor and other items, Leatherworkers are also able to take the various lower quality leather materials gathered from the Skinning profession and change them into higher quality items. As the quality of the leather increases, the number of materials needed to make the higher quality material increases with it. Leather cannot be converted from one expansion to the next, so no matter how many Savage Leather you have in your bags, you will never be able to transform it into the new Exotic Leather found in Mists of Pandaria.
Leatherworking previously had three specializations; Elemental for creating Agility leather gear, Tribal for Intellect leather gear, and Dragonscale for Intellect mail gear. These specializations were removed from the game in Patch 4.0.1. Patterns that required one of these specializations were either removed from the game or made available to any Leatherworker.
As you gain in skill in the Leatherworking profession you will find that more and more materials are needed to create patterns that will earn you skill points. Most Leatherworkers find that leveling these last few levels are costly and time consuming. However, the items you create at these levels can often be sold for great profit.
As with all professions, Leatherworkers gain certain perks from the profession at higher skill levels. Leatherworkers can apply Fur Lining to their own bracers and Leg Reinforcements to their own leg armor. These items are for the Leatherworkers use only and applying them will cause any item to become soul bound. As such, these enchants are moderately better than any other. Unlearning Leatherworking will cause these enchants to become inactive.
