How to Make a Single Player MMO

By -

No pesky kill steals til level 20 or so.

1up has a review of the day/night system in AoC, which for the first several levels basically allows you to play solo through the early parts of the game.

I spent my first dozen or so levels in Funcom's PC MMORPG Age of Conan alone. I'm not talking "alone in a crowd," stalking boar spawn points while swearing at the dozens of other new players kill-stealing and crowding out quest givers. Nor am I talking alone because the beta server's a ghost town -- quite the contrary, as the global chat is alive with advice, opinions, and philosophical musings on barbarism. No, I mean alone. Aside from a brief stint in the multiplayer sunshine just before you enter the gates of the island city of Tortage, there are no other people to play with. I'm not sure whether "single-player MMORPG" qualifies as an oxymoron or a paradox, but that's how Conan presents itself -- at least for the 15 levels or so levels I've played so far.
