Dragonblight is one of the many exciting zones in the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK) expansion for the World of Warcraft (WoW). The zone is mainly a frozen wasteland that houses the dragon graveyard. While the zone has a lot of history and lore around it, however not much is known yet about what will take place there in WotLK. What we do know so far is that it will be a mid level expansion zone that many ongoing story lines will be involved in the zone.

An icy image of Dragonblight

The zone is mainly thought of as the dragon graveyard. Regardless of the flight or differences, for generations aging, sick or injured dragons from the five different flights have all made their way back here to die in the Dragonblight. This has made the center of the zone a wasteland of gleaming bones of the many long dead dragons. The graveyard surrounds an ancient temple called Wyrmrest Temple, which is believe to have been created by the titans shortly after the world was created. Surrounding the temple are five shrines, one to each of the dragonflights; red, blue, black, green, and bronze.

While the center of the zone is barren, the surrounding area is made up of dense forests, and can be quite beautiful. Or at least it would be if not crawling with wendigo, worgen, Nerubians and worse.

A bridge scene in Dragonblight

The primary inhabitants of the zone are the Dragons themselves, however the Alliance, Horde and Scourge have all established presences in the Dragonblight. In addition to the primary factions, the Nerubians can also be found in the zone, as well as single Tauren settlement.

The dragons tend to stay near the center of the blight near Wyrmrest Temple, while the other inhabitants occupy the edges of the zone. The Scourge control the eastern edge closest to Grizzly Hills and Zul'Drak, while the Nerubians stay to the northern edge near the entrance to Azjol-Nerub.

History and Lore

The nicer side of Dragonblight

History has it that after the titans created the Wyrmrest Temple and the five shrines the five dragon aspects were blessed in the fortress and given the responsibility to watch over the land. This could explain why all the dragonflights are compelled to return to the Dragonblight to die, to be near the source of their creation. The dragons fiercly protect the temple and its shrines.

Recently though, the Scourge have moved into the zone to lay siege to the shrines and attempt to control them and create new varieties of undead dragons to serve the Lich King. In response the red dragonflight has started recruiting heroes to help fight off the Scourge. One of the groups that has joined the fray is the former Scarlet Crusade, now called the Scarlet Onslaught. The Alliance and Horde have also started reinforcing the zone and all of the various factions hope to turn the tide in the fight against the Lich King.

To further complicate matters in the zone, Malygos leader of the blue dragonfligh, has moved colossal machines into the zone over key magical ley lines. These machines are attempting to manipulate the magical energy in the world and focus it towards the Nexus in an attempt to drain the world of its magic. This could result in a catastrophe that may well effect the entire world if not stopped.

Instances

Not much is know as of yet in regards to instances in the zone . It is possible that Wyrmrest Temple will be an instance, or the five temples surrounding it. However it has also been rumored that Naxxramas will be moved to the zone as a new level 80 10/25 man raid. This is due to the fact that at Blizzcon 2007 a large necropolis was shown floating over the terrain of Dragonblight. In addition Blizzard has repeatedly stated that Naxxramas will likely make a reappearance in the Wrath of the Lich King.
