WoW: Wrath of the Lich King's Launch Date Editorial - Just when will it come out?

When is the expansion coming out? is the #1 thread on the official forums next to why Leeroy Jenkins and Chuck Norris would make a great standup comedy team.

The release of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is highly anticipated by the entire playerbase. Guilds are slowing down their progress, gold farming is taking priority over gear, and everyone is waiting with baited breath on the latest news of the release. David "Xerin" Piner takes up the magic 8-ball and tries to divine the release date based on Blizzard's past history and current evidence laying about the Internet. So be sure to check it out to get an idea of when the expansion may launch.

The first thing to realize is that any date before BlizzCON 2008 is a wash. There is no way they’d release the game before the convention. As a matter of a fact the launch date will probably be told at BlizzCON. So let’s go ahead and say that a month after BlizzCON would be the most logical conclusion on a release date. So let’s say November is the earliest (which is probably the same conclusion the Gamestop Warlocks came up with).

I also think it will be released in January/09 and, in the interim, we'll see one more big patch with with lots of candy to keep us happy until then. Most likely with some pre-WotLK stuff like we saw with TBC.

Well we mus'n't forget how much TBC was delayed from its originaly planned release date. So figuring it's pushed a few months back from November, say sometime in winter.

January is a fantastic launch window for a high rpofile game. All the big, pre-christmas laucnhes have their marketing wound down and all the kids have their christmas present cash.

Honestly I would be surprised if it was not basically January 16, 2009, 2 years to the day TBC came out. They did the new talents in November or early December if I remember correctly and then when the expansion came out it was smooth sailing...if it ain't broke why fix it? Hopefully they do the same things again, let us play with the new talents and such, and then when the release comes around we'll be set.

As much as it would be nice to see it in November 2008, I'd rather them take their time to get most of the bugs worked out first and release it in early 2009. Rushing it onto the market just for the almighty $ could ruin the game if it's full of bugs and glitches.
