Introduction to The Renown System
What is the Renown System?
The Renown system in Warhammer Online is an experience point system for RvR, that players can gain only by participating in player vs. player combat. While you gain experience points for both PvE and PvP in WAR, you can only gain Renown, and Renown Ranks, from PvP. You should look at the Renown system as a bonus to the XP system in the game. It adds another dimension to the game, giving you more ways to customize your character. XP is the main way of gaining powers, abilities, and becoming much tougher in WAR, and the Renown system gives some bonuses for those that wish to partake in PvP (and why wouldn't you? I mean there is no greater satisfaction than seeing another player's character dead at your feet). Unlike other games with a PvP reward system, in WAR you don't have to stay on top of any list of the best PvPers out there. You can play as much or as little as you want, and still earn great rewards.
How Do I Start Gaining Renown?
Your first introduction to the Renown system will most likely come through Scenarios. You can easily enter the Scenario queue at any time and at any level of the game by clicking the Scenario button attached to your mini map. You can find great guides to Scenarios here. Just keep in mind, that after the Scenario you will return to the exact location you left at. So make sure you are in a safe place!

Renown Rank Bar. |
So now that you have played a Scenario or two, you probably noticed a small purple bar below your XP bar that is filling up. You should have also noticed that while you were busy killing other players, and striking fear of your name forever into their psyche, there was a purple number floating up just under the XP number after every kill. This is how much Renown that kill, or heal, during PvP earned you. Yes, you can earn Renown from healing as well, but only in PvP, and only on targets other than yourself. You also earn Renown points from kills by other members in your group, much like XP in PvE, as long as you are nearby when the kill takes place. Finally, you can gain Renown by capturing and defending battlefield objectives and keeps. However your Renown Rank can never exceed your current level. So if you are level 12, you can be a maximum of Renown Rank 12.
What can I do with Renown?
So you have run through a few Scenarios, you have watched your Renown bar climb a few times, what does it do for you? What’s the Benefit?

Location of Renown Rank Trainer |
There are several reasons you want to increase your Renown levels. First, you can buy gear from Renown Merchants scattered throughout the Realms. Renown Merchants can be found in most warcamps in every Realm. While Renown gear does cost you money, you can only access it by attaining Renown Ranks. The gear available covers everything from weapons, armor, jewelry, and pretty much every slot available on your character. As you gain Renown ranks, you get access to better and better gear. Renown gear is usually the equivalent of the best Public Quest gear at your level. As such, for very little money, you can get some of the best gear in the game by simply slaughtering enemy players and helping your Realm win. Thats right, you heard me correctly, you get some of the best gear in game for slaughtering your foes.... WIN WIN!

Renown Advancement Chart. |
Another big thing Renown is good for is Renown Points. For each Renown Rank you gain, you get one Renown Point. You can spend Renown Points at an Apprentice Renown Trainer on things like stat increases, skill increases and RvR tactics. This is a great way to really increase the abilities of your character. Which makes it easier to kill enemy players for your realm, which gives you more Renown, which... well, you get the idea. You can do everything from increasing your character's stats, such as strength or wisdom, to taking tactics that gives you more XP during PvP. You will quickly find yourself watching that little purple bar almost as closely as your XP bar. While Renown Merchants are common place, Renown Trainers are a bit more spread out. Each Realm has an Apprentice Realm Trainer in the first Chapter 3 camp you come to. There are others, but the first ones you will see are not until Chapter 3. If you don’t want to wait until you stumble upon them, I have provided the locations of each of the first Apprentice Renown Merchants below.
Finally,
you gain new Titles for each
Renown Rank you
gain. Lets face it,
this is the biggest
reason to want to increase your Renown Rank.

Getting a Title that says I am cooler than you are, and
have killed more
players than you have, is the best reward out there!
The innovation behind the Renown system provides perks in the way of gear, ability increases, and titles (plus, off-the-hook mayhem!) for both the casual and hard core gamer. You will quickly find yourself watching that little purple bar as closely as you watch your XP bar, always knowing that something cool is right around the corner. So get out there and WAAAGH! And may all your hits be crits!
