Quite possibly, yes.

There's been a lot of talk lately about the zombie event in World of Warcraft. Most have complained, and others have been left scratching their heads. The questions left behind, for those who care to ask them, are "What was the point of that?", and "Why did Blizzard choose to promote Wrath of the Lich King in this way?"

Many people will say that Blizzard made a mistake with this event. But if you really stop to think about it, Blizzard isn't just out to sell an expansion because it makes them more money. (And it will make them more money - gobs of it.) Blizzard is out to tell a story through their game, and characters in stories need motivation. Guess what people - your characters in WoW are characters in the story too. Not just the NPCs. Blizzard has now given you motivation to go to Northrend and kick Arthas' behind for the very annoying plague.

Colin Brennan of Anti-Aliased can explain the details much better. It boils down to this: A lot of what happened during the plague - the griefers turning on their own as zombies - is exactly what Arthas would want to see. Induce panic in a society and the society will turn and devour itself. But, in a panic there are always individuals who will stand up and show themselves for the heroes they are. Follow those individuals to Northrend, for they are the heroes of the next expansion.
