7 Day WAR Report: November 16-22, 2008

The Past Week in Warhammer Online
November 16th-22nd, 2008

News

Something Happened on the Way to the Concert
The second Live Event for Warhammer Online hit this week, with the start of Heavy Metal. Beginning Tuesday, November 18th, the Tome of Knowledge received a new tab to track the daily tasks required of the 2 week long event quest. Note that the original start date of November 17th was changed, but someone forgot to update the ToK art.

Part of the appeal of the event was the requirement that players log in every day to complete that day's task. If you missed one, the task would be locked and you would be out of the running to win the Heavy Metal Chest. Inside the chest was your key to accessing the two new classes before they are opened to the general public in December. However, after much whining and threats to return to WoW (and a few problems with the Reikland Factory Scenario), Mythic Entertainment smacked the event with the Easy Button. The daily log-in requirement is gone, and players now can complete all the tasks whenever they want, provided they do so before December 1st.

Testing, is This Thing On?
Game Update 1.0.5 launched this week, but it wasn't quite the update we expected. Mark Jacobs stated that due to overwhelming feedback from players on the Test Server, the sweeping class ability changes were not yet ready for Live. Many of Mythic's ideas have been re-written, and they have more items for improvement in the works. The focus of the Test Server has changed, now, and only the invited players can log in to test the new Black Guard and Knight classes. Rumor has it that T3 templates for the classes are being created now, so the higher end abilities can be put through their paces.

The Internet is Really Great

Long overdue are the new improvements to the Realm War site. The Realm War functions as players' home away from home when they can't log in, providing more information than you can shake a Squig at. Character listings and guild information was always there, but now even more can be found. A new Dev Diary this week documents the improvements and added features. While you're at work, check the control status of the various zones, Keep ownership (including the last time they were turned over), and even pull up the RvR lake maps to see real-time status of each Battlefield Objective. Shoot, with this much information, you should keep the Realm War site open while you play to direct your RvR warband more efficiently.

And Now, a Word From the Players
There were plenty of player-made contributions this week. Ten Ton Hammer's very own JoBildo (AKA William Murphy) created the Guide to World Domination, WAR Style that was published on The Herald. His guide gives you the basics on the City campaigns, and what is required to overthrow the enemy's capital. The WARP 11: Heavy Metal Podcast covers the Event, Bestial Tokens and more. Two pieces of fiction graced the official site as well. Cruel as Ice, Cold as Steel is for the Black Guard fans, while The Sword is Forged follows a Knight of the Burning Sun. Both stories promise more entries will come in the future.

Every Day of the Week
Patch, patch, patch, every day is a patch! While the daily Heavy Metal task requires a brief downtime to implement, Mythic Entertainment took the opportunity to update the servers every day. Monday was for Shamans, Tuesday for Game Update 1.0.5, Wednesday fixed the ToK, Thursday was giant, Friday adjusted the Reikland Factory queue, and even Saturday wasn't safe.

A Moment of Silence
While Warhammer Online continues to sell very well, announcements this week show problems elsewhere. Age of Conan's Funcom is rumored to have laid off a large chunk of their workforce. The Bane must be winning, as Tabula Rasa will soon be no more. To those displaced players, we in Warhammer Online welcome you with open arms (we could always use fresh victims...).

Tip of the Week

Did you know there are 72 different emotes that you can activate while playing? These are just the / command emotes, and don't include the various pocket items you can obtain for even more choices. For a full listing of the emotes in game, you can type /emotelist in the chat bar, and they will be sent to your main Chat window. It's well known that WAR characters can't /dance, but they make up for that with /special. Ask a nearby Goblin to show off his /special if you want a good laugh.

Ten Ton Hammer Works For You

With the start of the Heavy Metal this week, your Ten Ton Hammer staff dug in to give you the skinny on everything that's rocking the event. As fast as they patch the servers with the new daily task, our very own WAR Journal: Heavy Metal is updated with all you need to know. Can't log in to play? Stuck at work? Keep the Journal bookmarked and stay in the know. Here's a bit of what the daily journal entries show.

I was pleasantly surprised with the task required of me today. My Tome told me to go out into the lands, and complete 3 Stages of a Public Quest. Since it didn't specify where I need to go to accomplish the mission, I decided to return to my roots. It had been a long, long time since I had visited my native Nordland, and I relished the chance to return home. I made my way to the grumpy dwarf at the nearby camp, who assisted me with strapping in to one of his crazy flying contraptions. I'll never understand why they can't just use a good, solid horse.

Those diligent players who logged in every day were rewarded with the Herald's Signet on Friday, a new trophy to wear on the belt or shoulders. The Cloak reward should come up early next week, so be ready!

Ten Ton Hammer never sleeps, as the following articles prove. Check out the latest in our ever growing collection of guides, interviews and more!
