In an official press announcement today, Sony announced drastic cuts to its non-core businesses and electronics manufacturing arms resulting in the layoff of 8,000 employees to shave $1.1 billion in costs. The language of the announcement did not mention any subsidiaries targeted for downsizing.
Initial reports from inside Sony Online Entertainment, makers of massively multiplayer games like EverQuest, EverQuest 2, and the upcoming kid-oriented MMO Free Realms, indicate that this particular branch of Sony Computer Entertainment America was not significantly affected by the news, but we await confirmation from an official source.
***Update! Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed it will not be affected by the cuts. Read the story here.
