Guide to the Lone-lands

By Darkgolem

The Lone-lands found east of Bree-land are past the edge of the civilizations of the free people.  No longer can you walk the roads here with safety, and the things here have not heard of king (as the hobbits say).  The main bastion of civilization here are the camps of the Eglain peoples, a group of humans who have lived in this area but now are encroached upon by orcs and other foul creatures.  Aside from the Eglain, you will find orcs, goblins, wargs, half orcs, trolls, wicked dwarves, foul and ferocious beasts.  There is very little safety in the Lone-lands.

There are basically 5 areas that make up the general area of the Lone-lands.

Annunlos

Annunlos is the westernmost portion of the Lone-lands.  While not safe, it certainly is much less dangerous than the eastern portions of this region.  The northernmost portion of Annunlos is Break-rift lake, a mountainous lake near the Midgewater Pass.  This area is rife with orcs and wolves.  Weathertop, located south of Break-rift lake is the famous crumbling ruin that once was a fortress of the great north kingdom of men.  Now Weathertop is threatened by orcs, and haunted by their Crabain spies.  The quest, Retake Weathertop, is found here.  There are some goblin clans found on the southern slopes of Weathertop, and the north-western portion has some orc camps, so caution should be used in this area.

In the Shadow of WeathertopAlong the side of the road from Bree, passing directly into Annunlos, is the Forsaken Inn.  Some very small amount of commerce goes on here between Bree-land and the Forsaken Inn, but the majority of the inn is home to Eglain (driven from their homes to the south), some merchants, and a few loners or odd types of the type seen in any inn in any strange land.  Here you can get your mail, and repair your equipment, along with buying some basic goods and getting a few interesting quests helping the Eglain.

Minas Eriol is an ancient ruin found south of the road leading east through the Lone-lands.  Minas Eriol has two portions, the northern portion, which is haunted with wolves and wargs, and the southern portion, which is the home of a wicked goblin tribe.  Several quests found in the Forsaken Inn leads to Minas Eriol.   In the depths of the ruins, amidst the gullies leading down from these ruins, there are many deadly spiders, and care must be taken to avoid slipping to a horrible death here.

East of Minas Eriol, on the edge of Nein Enidh, is the ruined Mithenrost.  Inhabited by wicked dwarves, several quests from Ost Guruth lead here.  The ruins must be entered from the east in Nein Enidh, by a sloping path on the edge of the cliffs here.

Nain Enidh

Nain Enidh is a hilly, narrow area which is divided east to west by the great road heading through the Lone-lands from the Trollshaws and Bree-land.  The south of these hills contains two ruins, one being Thanobel, a simple watch building that is no longer complete, and now is inhabited by dwarves from Mithenrost, the other being Ost Cyrn.  Ost Cyrn is a larger ruin inhabited by vicious orcs led by an powerful orc chieftain.  Be prepared for much fighting if you travel here.

The north portion of Nain Enidh has two regions.  Once is occupied by dangerous half orcs, Naerost.  This area is well patrolled, and one should be careful here in the shadow of Weathertop.  To east of Naerost, almost within sight of Ost Guruth, is Amon Ros.  Amon Ros is a spider haunted ruin, full of vicious web-spinning, poisonous beasts, and one should not come here unaccompanied.

Talath Gaun

Talath Gaun is a sloping moor straddling the road, leading down to the south to the foul swamp, Harloeg, and north to the haunted Naragmaur.  Both of these fell areas should be avoided by any but the most brave.

Located wet of Naragmaur, just north of the road here, is the last outpost of Eglain, the partially ruined fortress of Ost Guruth. Trolls in Harloeg Ost Guruth is only a temporary respite for any that live here.  Wargs and orcs are found practically on the doorstep of this area.  Several quests found here involve these foul beasts, and the wizard Radagast the Brown can be found here also.

South of Ost Guruth on the other side of the road are the Torn Stones, the home of the powerful but peaceful earth-kin.  These creatures, while strange and giant, are not hostile to humans, nor normally live here, having been driven out of Harloeg by trolls.  East of Ost Guruth almost directly down a steep slope here is Naragmaur, a swampy area infested by twisted beasts, undead and leading north to Agamaur.  Past Naragmaur is the wight haunted ruin of Dol Vaeg.  At the eastern edge of Talath Gaun is the Last Bridge leading to the Trollshaws, and beyond the lands of men.

Agamaur

The most foul of lands in the Lone-lands, this area is infested by undead, corrupted hill men in league with the enemy, and fouler things.  Do not go here unless you have no choice.  There is only one way to reach this area, via a narrow crevice leading from Naragmaur, and if you should enter here, directly left is a foothold the Eglain attempt to maintain, with only tentative success.

Harloeg

Occupied by trolls in the eastern wooded portion, haunted by monstrous insects and foul wights to the south and west, this swamp south of Talath Gaun is a good place to avoid.  Far to the south of Talath Gaun are the ruins of Ost Haer and Nindor.  A few brave heroes stand watch over these deadly ruins, but without brave adventurers this place will never be free of evil.  Eventually you are asked to go here if you adventure with the Eglain, but otherwise, this fey swamp should be avoided.
