Although the subject of this may not be news to the savvy free-to-play game follower, many folks that may not be F2P aficionados may think that the market is drying up for these games now that the recession is in full swing and major investors have lost the ample access to their pocketbooks. VentureBeat has posted an interesting article on Perfect World Entertainment and their push into the F2P gaming marketplace. They touch base with many of the individuals we've talked to in the past few months, and really hit on PWI's upcoming title, Ether Saga Online. It may not be the most in-depth MMO article on the Web, but it's good to see other press outlets picking up on the F2P marketplace.

In the past day, Ether Saga Online already has 10,000 U.S. players. It will have an open beta starting in March or so.

Bellis thinks the secret is to give people the equivalent of disk-based, deep online games for free. The company also tries hard to not to frustrate the free players. It does that by making sure that pouring cash into the game is an option that enhances the game, but not a requirement for players who don’t have money.
